Looking for a rocking semi-hollow pickup
« on: June 13, 2006, 10:32:41 PM »
I have a Gibson ES-137 Classic that is abnormally resonate and sweet sounding acoustically (I picked it from quite a few) and that creates a little bit of a problem when combined with the tuning and strings I used.  I tune down to B and use 14-68's (I've done this for years on many guitars) and with the deep resonance of this semi-hollow it can make many pickups sound too round and undefined.  I'm looking for a sharp, attacking tone that is full bodied and with the depth being added from the semi-hollow.  What Bare Knuckle do you think would best fit this?  My amp (an Electric H120 and a Matamp GTL140) seem to tighten and brighten up a little bit better with higher output signals so a good distortion pickup is fine with me, and I get most of my distortion from the power tubes and with clean boosts....I use my neck pickup for cleans by backing off the volume and it can sound quite nice.

Stoner rock/Doom metal with some progressive elements but I'm not looking to be as round and squishy as many stoner/doom bands.  I want something deep but aggressive and percussive from the pickups, the Electric and the semi-hollow body will add some of the rounder warmth.

Mules will do anything if you have the right amps. They are my choice.

VHII, Emerald and Mississipi Queen are the models that come to my mind but I'm just guessing. Your application is rather a specific one -- I don't think any of us has ever used a semihollow tuned to B --, I'd recommend you asking Tim in PM or e-mail.

I wouldn't get a too hot pickup for a (semi)hollow guitar. ou'd probably get too much unwanted feedback. So I think you should go with something vintage that is still pecussive and agressive. Maybe Riff Raffs would do the trick.

:D By the sounds of it to me at least i`d  go with a set of Mules. There a good all round P/U. There not to gainy so you won`t get unwanted  feedback from the guitar. And they  can handle anything music  wise  you  throw  at `em !!!

I've been thinking about a set of P90's but I still want a big low-end just the tight, crunchiness of the P90's in the mid's.  My semi-hollow doesn't really seem to feedback too much at high gains, it seems much more dependent on volume levels.
