Best place for testing amps?
« on: June 15, 2006, 02:18:59 PM »
Hi guys

I'm based in Nottingham and all the local music shops only sell a few amps the standard ones. Anyway I was wondering if there is anywhere with a massive selection of amps and where they also have a good attitude toward buyers i.e. they will let me try anything I like out with no hassle. I'm willing to travel to wherever in the Uk.

cheers!

Hello there.

I'm based in Nottingham myself (well, 12 miles outside) and find the shops in and around Nottingham to be very lacking in their selections of gear.

The main 'big' shop around is Sound Control, but like you say, they only tend to have the standard Marshall and Fender style of amps instock.

I'm interested in any suggestions for Musos original question too :)
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

I don't like Soho soundhouse. I went in there, and the sales assistant let me try out a couple of up-market ibanezes (J-custom) and a USA Jackson. Then I over-heard the manager (I was in the sound-proof booth, which apparently wasn't very soundproof) reprimanding the sales assistant, saying something along the lines of "You just don't let some random kid off the street come in and try some high price guitars!". Now (a) I'm 24 and (b) I had enough cash (at that time) to buy three of those guitars. The guitars were also REALLY poorly set up (I mean, I could do a better job, and I'm a hack). I don't like 'em, needless to say. Being in the centre of London, they're gonna have to be very sale-oriented, and obviously may have a problem with shoppers off the street coming in for a laugh, as it were, but that was ridiculous. Notwithstanding the fact that I'd come the whole way from Northern Ireland to try out their stuff...

Anyway, I strongly recommend the Wembley Guitar Centre. I went in, again, random kid off the street, and they let me try what I wanted. Were really nice and pleasant too, and never hurried me. They have a soundproof booth in the centre, so you can crank all you want (attenuating earplugs might be useful, lol), and I think they stock Engl, Marshall, Fender, Mesa, Ashdown, Hughes and Kettner, Laney, Peavey and Mesa (probably more).

The Oxford Guitar Gallery and Holiday Music in Leytonstone, East London, were also similarly great in letting me try out what I wanted, and were equally nice, but neither had a soundproof booth (they had separate testing rooms, but they weren't soundproof). So if you can only make one place, I'd say the Wembley Guitar Centre (from my experience).

Have you tried Electro Music in Doncaster? They have a decent selection of amps from the well known manufacturer's (Fender, Marshall, Mesa, Laney, Peavey, as well as some Cornford, Orange, etc).

They also have three small rooms where you can try out amps at a reasonable volume.  :D

Best time to go is during the week, or a Sunday.

If you travel by road, Doncaster is about an hour up the M1, or better still, the A1. If you use the train, it's a bit of a walk from the station.

^ just to point out, I've only tried a few shops on the mainland- if some of the other guys have tried a shop as well as the WGC, and say it's better, listen to them!

I'll second Electromusic in Doncaster. I spent two hours in there yesterday trying out various amps. They never pressure you to buy, you can try what you want for as long as you want and their staff are very friendly.

Matamp.

No, seriously: Matamp.  Of course, they only stock their own amps, but you'll be treated like a king while you're there.

I bought my amp in Holiday and it's a tasty looking shop and they are friendly there too.
