What pickup with RY/NB/MM?
« on: June 21, 2006, 03:13:24 PM »
Hey all, I need some help with pickups here
so the thing is that I need pickups for my guitar and I'm not sure if I should get either Rebel Yell, Nailbomb or Miracle Man pickup
Currently my guitar has one humbucker and a hum-cancelling single coil

First I need help to decide which bridge humbucker I should buy
I'm very much into stuff like Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Led Zeppelin
also I'd like it to have nice clean sound so I could play something like Pink Floyd
I don't want thin highs cuz they sound horrible and crunchy low end would be awesome

and then it comes to the single coil, I was thinking about some DiMarzio one, I don't really know, so much help is needed here also

Oh yea, and I play through Roland Cube 30 amp

Help is very appreciated!

i would definitely say the Nailbomb...especially with the bases you want to cover. It's very good at metal, very good at classic rock, lower gain stuff as well, just a great, well balanced pickup. Great clean sound too, so you CAN get that spacious reverbed-out Gilmour sound. This pickup has great thick lows, crunchy and characterful mids and very good highs. I have a pair and I love them. They let me play anything from Jazz to Heavy Metal. GREAT STUFF! The Rebel Yell wouldn't be a bad choice either but it's more of a classic rock pickup, whereas the Nailbomb is in the middle of the road and works for so many styles...So, that's my 2 cents.

Wow, that sounds really great!
So be it, I'm gonna buy the Nailbomb for the bridge
Thanks downrodeo!

Now I just need help to get a new hum-cancelling single coil that will fit with Nailbomb

why not get a normal single coil and a split nailbomb, and wire them so that you can have the split nailbomb and single coil running in either series/parallel and then you could have a pure single coil tone and also loads more sounds to play with in the series/parallel region....also (although i might be completely wrong on this) i think the parallel sound gives the hollow-y sorta sound which Gilmour has in some of his songs

....and breathe....

so... you mean that i'd put kinda like 2 single coils instead of a total humbucker and a single coil?
sounds cool but im not even nearly good enough to do that

If you're looking within the BKP range you won't find a single coil sized humbucker - stacked or rail (if that's what you mean by hum-cancelling single coil).

You will find some of the best true singlecoils in production.

My advice is to go with a Trilogy in the neck to balance with the Nailbomb - this will give you a great contemporary hot single coil tone without any real drop in volume.

(If you really want a humbucker in a single-coil size, I think it's S Duncan for you).

Good luck.

nah, it's still a normal 4-conductor HB, but instead of the hum-cancelling SC, i'd buy a normal SC, as then i'd have the true SC voice as well as all the different ways you can wire the two together to get loads of different sounds.

Caffeine, I still didn't quite get it haha
but are you sure that would work out?

and Dave, I'm not sure how a humbucker and 1 single coil would work, I quess you'd need another single coil
(but I don't know a hell about pickups so tell if I'm wrong)

so I'm probably gonna buy a SD rail pickup, just don't know which one
or then DiMarzio (cuz Steve Vai and John Petrucci uses them :P)

Just a side note on the Nailbomb...make sure you set it high enough to your strings so you get that nice, gainy sound, because it might not seem to you like they are a great pickup for metal otherwise, which IS NOT TRUE at all.... It's really good for everything. If you wanted a straight up metal pickup you could get a Miracle Man but it's not nearly as versatile.

I think people are getting confused on the outcome of this guitar.

You're still hlding out for a hum cancelling neck pickup, whereas the options offered to you by others won't get that.

What you could/should do imo is get your nailbomb in the bridge, and match it with a Trilogy in the neck position. This (coupled with a 5 way switch) would allow many possible wiring positions...

I would wire it as follows:

Position 1: Nailbomb in series
Position 2: Nailbomb in Parallel
Position 3: One coil of Nailbomb + Trilogy in series
Position 4: As above but in parallel
Position 5: Trilogy alone

By my reckoning this gives you a large number of differing sounds, with hum cancelling in positions 1 to 4...Should cover all your bases tbh

Oh lol, now I got the idea haha
I didn't get it cuz I got the LP style 3 way switch on my guitar and I thought it self-explanatory, sorry

Thanks downrodeo on the note, I try to keep it on my mind!

AND WOW!! I just checked out some BK single coil clips, Trilogy just dropped my jaws PDT_030

So now I know I'm DEFINATELY gonna buy Nailbomb for the bridge and Trilogy for neck!
Thanks very much for the help! You don't know how much help it has been to a pickup noob like me!
Thanks again guys! :D
