I've not actually tried that.. thing is the CC is really thick, and hasnt got the best definition, so I think it will sound really cr@p in a LP. I might try the Mule in the strat though at least.

Oh and does anyone know what the specs of the RY are, such as output etc? It doesnt say on the product page.

As far as I know the bridge is around 14K and the neck is the same as the Cold Sweat neck.

Tom, even if you don't have a guitar for the Mules, I think you should keep them (packed nicely and stored separately). I am pretty sure there will be a time when you start missing the true PAF sound. ;)

BTW, my Strat with the Nailbomb also cuts through better than my Artist with the Mules but in return the latter one's a lot more responsive, resonant and cleaner. Even though my Strat is generally "more fun" to play and may have a more spectacular sound to some ears, the Artist has the tone that inspires me and that I'll never get bored of no matter how old I am. :)

Yeah I am probably gonna keep the Mules, because I just know I'll regret it if I do sell them. Just gotta find some way of getting all that money for even the bridge pickup :lol:

Hmmmm.

I just put some new strings on my LP (10s, I usually play 11s) and got to play with the hotplate on -12 as no one was in (-16 sucks so much tone) and it was so much better than yesterday when I was playing old 11s.. maybe 10s just sound better on this guitar, we'll see when the new string tone wears off I guess.. I always make these threads THEN try new strings or whatever then realise Mules still rock :lol: :oops:

Chiming in late here .... I'd agree with those who don't think the pickups were your problem; Mules oughta cut it in most situations! Still, for the tones you describe aiming for, mmm, I'd say the Rebel Yell or Crawlers might work well. (So might the Cold Sweat, I suppose, but I'm not as into ceramic pups as I am Alnico!)

haha does it sound awesome then? What singles did you get to go with your NB (assuming its not a superstrat type job)? I want Apaches because they seem awesome but I dont think they will balance well with the NB atall.

It's an HS setup, there's an Irish Tour in the neck position. I have the NB pretty close to the strings (it's LOUD), and I adjusted the height of the IT so that it was just the sweet pot: plenty of power but still enough sustain. There's a certain height with singles where sustain suddenly drops -- I adjusted the IT a little bit lower than that.

The NB's definitely louder than the IT when clean (didn't try to balance them, though, I went for maximum power with each one... ;)), with overdrive, though, they sound more balanced. With high-gain they're perfectly balanced. Tim originally recommended me a Trilogy Suite for the Nailbomb but I chose the IT for a more traditional bluesy character. Note that, though, it's an HS setup with only three positions. I believe a NB/IT/IT HSS set would be near perfectly balanced.

A Nailbomb would definitely overpower an Apache, it's not only low-output but also round, sweet and vintage sounding, which doesn't help it compete with the Nailbomb in AAAARRRRGGGH kind of music, lol.

I think a Crawler/Irish Tour HSS set could also be cool -- really get that smoky, ragey blues thing going 8)

For Apaches, I'd think you'd probably need to roll back to at least a Mule if not a Stormy Monday.

This guy is right; the differences you're experiencing has more to do with the difference in the guitars than the difference in the pickups

Well I was using a JB before and the best way I can describe it is that it eats the JB alive.It is tighter,more percussive,no nasty mid spike and the crunch is fabulous,not to mention how nicely it cleans up when dropping the volume knob.The SS sound clip really gets the point through.Now in my Chavel mutt w/ a Floyd ,it has a tad less overall girth than the SS clip but not by much(he recorded that with a Les Paul). I play a mix of hard rock and metal with my cover band.We do covers by Maiden,Thin Lizzy,VH,Sabbath,Scorps,AIC,Priest,Billy Idol(duh),King's X and more.The JB handled all of that well but had this spikyness and woolyness to the high and low mids respectively,that bothered me.I was needing more clarity.When I plugged in the RY,I knew immediately that those problems were gone.I also play in an original outfit that sounds reminiscent of Badlands(Jake E. Lee's heavy blues rock band) and I know it willcrush with that as well.So my verdict is it is killer for heavy blues and classic to hard rock and classic metal but I would leave the really hardcore thrash and stuff to a better suited pickup such as the Nailbomb.
