At the risk of revealling my senior years..... I saw Peter Green a long, loooong time ago. First at the Marquee club where he was playing through a Vox T60 amp (this is a transistor bass amp..used by Paul McCartney etc) and again later at an open air festival where he was using his Orange/Matamp gear. On both occassions he had a great sound. Whilst some of it could have been credited to his Les Paul (as you know because pickups were manually wound back then they could vary quite considerably - you could get a great and a shitety one made on the same day) I'm sure most of it was Peter Green - he seemed to sound amazing whatever he was playing through.
I remember reading a quote by a roady at a charity gig (Policeman's Ball??) where Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were guesting and had to use the same amp/guitar setup. He said they all sounded amazing but completely different. I guess back then there wasn't the variety of gear and effects which are available today and "'twas all in the fingers".
