New Muse Album

So I've listened to Black Holes and Revelations all the way through now, and I wondered what the rest of you thought?
Personally I was somewhat torn. It is undeniably a good album, without a single bad song on it, but at the same time it doesn't have any truly great songs, and it also lacks some of the things that make us love Muse. There's no Newborn or Hysteria on the album. Now it's perfectly good and reasonable for a band to progress and develop, but I feel that they've somewhat thrown the baby out with the bath water.
On the plus side it is a perfectly crafted pop album, and will probably provide them with their best ever singles sales. They seem to have achieved the guitar band doing modern dance music thing better than anyone else before.
However, while it is a fairly bleak album, I feel it lacks the angst, anger and venom of the previous 2 albums. It might grow on me though...........

yeah, i was a touch disappointed myself, with the exception of two songs on there (Knights of Cydonia and Assassin) i thought it was a bit pants.

Although, after hearing them on AOL sessions, i have grown to like Supermassive Black Hole

I've only ever heard their singles, as I didn't like them much so never listened to the album...Saw them on "Friday Night with Jonathan Ross" the other week and thought they were awful - I used to think he could sing quite well, but (to use an old phrase) it sounded like he was strangling a cat!

The guitar tone was nothing special either - distorted to buggery...far too over the top and unnecessary. Almost like those kids that think they have to turn the gain to 10 to play properly...

Needless to say, I wasn't impressed

dunno, i missed that show, but have a look at the AOL sessions...

i thought they sounded better live there than on the album...with the exception of plug in baby, where he sounded like he needed the big crowd to get him going properly on that song...so for that song i'd have to refer you to the absolution DVD

I watched the AOL Sessions you linked to, and that rendition of Plug in Baby is how I remembered his voice...I only listened to like the first 2 minutes of Knights of whatever it was and had to turn it off

I don't understand why he thought all that squealing was a good idea...I don't know what the song I saw before was, but it sorta alternated between that squealing, and screaming - both of which sounded horrible

The whole new album is on their myspace, I think its rubbish, so boring! I liked a few of their other songs but I get sick of them quickly.

^ The fact that he doesn't sing in a key that sounds natural - always sounds like he's forcing his voice to do something that it really really shouldn't :drink:

Its not a bad album, on the whole its pretty good. But no proper stand out tracks. But then again its more consistant.

Was fun putting this on over the Woolworths PA on a sunday. The grannies didn't know what hit them...

i disagree

i think that Knights of Cydonia is going to be huuuuuuge...even if it does have that weird word...falsettio.... or whatever it was, in it. I still think that song is going to be big

It's not the falsetto that I personally have a problem with - It's that he doesn't use words with it, it's just high pitched noise :)

I like the falsetto, IN MODERATION, same as I like a little bit of screaming now and then.
I saw the do Starlight on TOTP and they were much better live, the slightly different mix brought it to life more.
