50GB seems quite a lot.  A forum I run has over 2300 users and we do on average 30-35GB per month.  It may be mainly due to the attachments here, but it's probably worth checking that you have the Gzip compression option enabled in the phpBB admin section.

after there was loads of spam, Ol went through and deleted all the 'unused' accounts, which dropped it down to like 850
