Do BKP Do Chrome Bobbins???
« on: July 15, 2006, 09:26:28 PM »
Just wondering if BKP do/will be doing humbuckers with chrome bobbins like DiMarzio?  If they do, can they be made to look like burnt chrome?

They don't do chrome bobbins at the moment. I sure like the look of those. Maybe BKP will get these in the future.

If they're chromed plastic you can't give them the burned look.

My Strat is soon to get the BKP treatment. It's going HSS, with a chrome covered Holy Diver, and then 2 Irish Tours with the usual white covers being chrome plated...

It's an extra £10 to get them chromed, but if they can chrome plate singles then they may well be able to chrome plate HB bobbins - but they're plastic underneath so they can't be burnt

The best way to find out would be to PM Tim and ask him, and then report back here as chrome bobbins might look better than a chrome cover on my strat :P

No we don't and, would you believe, Dimarzio have patented it too
The thing with chrome plated plastic is it can still conduct so could create eddy currents-not a good thing to wind your coil wire around.Plus it being plastic, it'd melt if we tried to burn it.
Funnily enough we did look at it a few years ago but the coil wire shorted against the chromed plastic so we left it for dead.I don't know what DM are using to plate the bobbins and I'm sure they've looked into the conductivity of chrome so...........

Maybe DM have found a way to just chrome the top of the bobbins, and not all of it...

Maybe they coated it with a clearcoat.

It is just the tops of the bobbins that are chromed, and it's not chromed plastic - they bond a chromed metal top onto the bobbin.  I've never actually seen one up close, so I'm not sure how thick the metal top is - I'd guess similar to a normal metal pickup cover.

I think they were designed for the Jem 10th anniversary guitar, loads of chrome on that guitar and an etched metal scratchplate.

If they did chrome bobbins, would BKPs be any cooler? I don't know. If you spend the extra money on covers...man will you be satisfied with their looks. Stellar stellar stuff. Believe ME. My Nailbombs are absolutely killer when it comes to looks and sound.
