Epi Zakk Wylde LP - any good?

1. It is an Epiphone, and even though there are people who love their Epis, they say that they still feel "lacking" compared to a Gibby. *shrugs* Then why not get the Gibby then?

2. The paint is not great, but it will get you by. It is supposed to be an aged look, but it is yellow tinted is all.

3. The passive EMGs are ok, but I hate EMG personally. I'd rather have a refrigerator magnet with wire wrapped around it than an EMG.

4. The neck is not as good as other guitars. They are not consistant or uniform and that to me hurts.

5. The guitar is good no doubt, but not really worth the money asked for it. You can get a Epi. Custom, or for a little more cash, an Epi. Elitist and have a better guitar all around.

6. If you do get it, do these things.

a. Double pot it for added midrange and bite
b. Have new pick-ups put in.
c. Have a bone nut placed in it.

7. If you want great reviews of the Epi. Zakk model, go to www.ZakkWylde.com and you will have your fill of great reviews on Zakk guitars.

Cheers for that - I've decided not to bother and just get a set of Mules for my Gibson Les Paul.  I didn't really want to mod it from standard, but I think Mules will give it that classic Les Paul sound.  Why upgrade a cheap copy when you have the original?

Interesting comment.  I have an Epi SG (with Maestro vibrola and proper early 60s slim neck) and it's been fully upgraded with Riff Raffs and USA spec pots/wiring/caps/switch/jack.  It now sounds fantastic and is currently having a Tusq nut and TonePros bridge installed to finish the job off.  For £650 I've got something on a par with a Gibson '61 reissue for half the cost.  I've thought about getting a Gibson '61 or even a Custom Shop VOS but are they going to be £650 better or £1150 better than my Epi?  I seriously doubt it.  That's a huge wedge of cash to spend on a bit of "feel" and a badge...

I agree, but like you I buy what I want and what I need instead of what I think I want and need. That comment was made after seeing countless people buy an Epi. when they really want a Gibby.

Yeah I know it is weird to hear, but some people want a Gibby, but don't have the bones to throw down, and don't want to wait anymore since saving the cash they do have, so they plunk down the money they have saved for the Epi. Thus after awhile they are unhappy again, and find the guitar lacking.
