What things do you find yourself doing in your playing thats similar to other players that kinda puts your style together?

I use Claptons, Vai's and Wyldes Vibrato i've got all 3 down pretty convincingly just depends what im after.

Eddie Van Halens Tapped harmonics on bent notes that kinda "wah wah wah wooo wah" type thing.. great stuff

Zakk Wylde, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Al Di Meola - I try to alternate pick like these guys, doesnt happen though haha.

Satriani, Love his leggato style got that down pretty well..

I guess im just a mish mash of a very bad version of all the affordmentioned players.. But I guess im also trying to sound like myself aswell.

Sweep Like Jason Becker

Alternate Pick like Michael Angelo

Legato like Richie Kotzen

Tap like Greg Howe

Phrasing like Vito Bratta

I stole their licks and tricks but I lack their dedication to perfection :(

I would suggest

Talk to Whales like Adrian Belew and Jeff Beck as their bends and whammy abuse are totally unlike anybosy else.

But I also have (for off topic)

Stand with your mouth open like Rudolph Schenker ;)

Using the whammy ala Jeff Beck or Ray Gomez is an art, but one worth the practice time.

Add in Shawn Lane's stretches and Allan Holdsworth style legato, Carl Verheyen's intervalic playing and Steve Lukather's vibrato (he makes a simple pentatonic sound lush!).

Oh and don't forget multi tone bends like David Gilmour.

That's all i can really say. Though i'm trying to learn Randy Rhoads' classical influence and phrasing.

I guess I'm a mix of Angus Young's attack, attitude and vibrato, SRVs scale runs and slides with Dave Grohl's chord voicing.

hmmm?
Some of Vai's tone nuances (I'm talking about his mini slides, slight bends and stuff to play with a note)
Some of Nuno's Funk-Rock Riff-phrasing
Garsed-style Hybrid picking (This a fairly new one so it's not evolved yet)
Now divide everything by 100 and you have my level :D

(There's a ton of other influences, but these are the ones you could occasionally hear)

Pin ( Sikth ) tapping style.
John Petrucci's alternate picking.
Allan Holdsworths legato.
Mikael Akerfelts tastefullness.

I use techniques/styles from James Hetfield, Malcolm Young and Brian Setzer and on occasion a bit of Keith Richards. Wich has the upper hand depends on the piece of music I play.

The thing I've discovered is that I don't listen to enough guitarists to be influenced in such a way by any of them - I just take a scale, and make stuff up. I find I tend to alternate pick everything unless I'm playing blues, because it just makes sense.

The way it happens with me is not a case of "ooo I like how they do X and Y, I'll practise that" - more like "Oh, that sounds a bit like how I do X and Y" :P

ah fantastic! Especially Akerfeldt. That man is a god when it comes to emotional and powerful songwriting.

Im not really sure who influences my playing style. I dont think i go out of my way to play like certain people, but my brutal chugging is reminiscent of rob zombies music but he swaps guitarists in and out all the time. My more technical stuff is similar to some of alexi laiho's stuff. And when im jamming i think i can be a little like zakk with my alternate picking licks, altho i dont really idolise him or listen to that much of his stuff.

Difficult to say really. Im still broadening my horizons as i find i use alot of the same techniques over and over again. Im always adding in hammer on/pull off triplets in everywhere and neglecting stuff liek sweep picking, string bends and such. still, i got 4 weeks ahead of me of solid guitar palying and a nice regime to stick to so hopefully this will have all changed by then ;)
