I use the one built into my Line6 but if I was buying one I'd probably go for an Ernie Ball, they're solid and good quality. Morley make some good ones too. Or maybe try and find a Sho-Bud, it's what Larry Carlton uses and sounds sweet. Roland volume pedals are quite popular and I imagine they're good but haven't tried one.

i read on an overview of a boss volume pedal that it did'nt need a power supply. Is this the same with every volume pedal? It would be very handy if its with all of them because its one less cable to come unconnected

I have (and highly recommend) the Ernie Ball VP Junior. Completely passive, and includes a seperate tuner-out jack, and built like a tank.

that looks pretty good from what iv read on the internet. would i be able 2 set it to a position where i can have a set voulme eg the pedal in the middle and be able to bring the volume up or down by pushing the pedal up or down? and does it need a power cable/ battery to work?

Ive never played through one but I think passive means it runs without the use of batteries. And considering that it is an expression pedal of sorts its pretty much made so that you can change your volume level with the simple movement of ur foot. Also theres the George Dennis GD-20 Mono Volume Pedal. Im pretty sure it got the Guitar Worlds Editors choice or sumthing. Again never tried one though so :]

Well I've got an Ernie Ball Volume pedal and it works great. Smooth, when it's all the way back it's all the way off, when it's all the way forwards it's very transparant, and I found it could also be used to blend a second amp in too.

See, there's the normal "output" and there's also a "tuner out" that bypasses the volume pot, so this would be the unaltered signal regardless of where you position the rocker. Now if you have that going into a clean amp, then you can fade a dirty amp in with the volume pedal. I found it far mroe subtle than the sort of thigns you get with channel switching, kind of like in "Babe I'm Gonna Leave Ya" when the distorted tele comes in over the accoustic guitar, I didn't even realise at first.

But even if you just buy it for what it's intended for it's a good solid pedal, seems reliable, and it's passive and transparent.

If you want it for a solo boost or watnot you can stick some sort of wedge in it so when its 'all the way down' it is in fact in the middle, then works nicely as a volume boost and such.

And from the sounds alot of the volume pedals are passive so require no power source.. then again, im not a pro on these things so i really dont know :P

It's a bit like using the volume control on your guitar only it's under your foot
The tuner out is cool though
I have and love the Ernie Ball one

i ended up getting the  Boss FV500H pedal because i knew boss was a reliable make. It cost me £59 and when i first used it i was extreamly disapointed. The next day i had a band practice so i had the chance to try it out in the right circumstances... and it was brilliant. I could'nt ask for anything more. Perfect for solos and turning down the volume when singing/ other guitarist did a solo.

The Ernie Ball pedals are tough to beat. Built like a tank and really smooth to operate.

The amp tech I use built a really cool midi volume pedal for Jennifer Batten. It sat in her effects set up and would automatically equalise the volume differences between different effect patches. Neat.
