How much RAM do you recommend for a 3 GHz PC? I use it for drafting/rendering (ArchiCAD), graphics (Photoshop) and making music, mainly sampling (Kontakt). Currently there's 512MB RAM in there (I guess it's SD...) and Windows XP really slows down sometimes.

I've heard the 2GB of RAM is best for music production.

OK, thanks for the responses! There are two RAM slots in the motherboard, so I'll buy 2 x 1 GB RAM. :)

Ahh, thanks for the link! I think I've saved a lot of money with that scanner. It says that PC3200 DDR400 would be the best for my computer - so no need for the 533-667 MHz DDR2 modules I wanted to buy before, because my motherboard doesn't support them and they'd run at lower speed anyway. :D

Go for the maximum you can afford that's supported by your motherboard (most modern, non-64bit motherboards will happily do 4GB).

The amount required is really not related to the clock speed of the CPU though.  It's more to do with stopping the operating system having to swap stuff in/out from disk.  You will see a big performance boost if you do a lot of work with large files though (gfx, audio, etc.).

Oookay... thanks! Now I only know that I need 184-pin DDR, the more the better. Hmm, so I need a second harddrive, too... now I have only one divided into two parts, one for the system and program files, and one for my own stuff.

Damn... I should've bought less BKP and more RAM...

ok, i get the feeling you;'re being a touch sarcastic

so i'm gonna say one more thing then go

havent the faster hard drive as a second drive won't make any difference, as RAM can only run as fast as the hard drive it is getting the file off, so when the files are on your slower hard drive, the swap file will be slower :D

and what ARE you on about, spend less on BKP????? madness :p
