Trem spaced pickup with normal bridge?
« on: July 29, 2006, 06:38:32 PM »
I just recognised this problem, so I thought I'd consult the 'jedi council of pickups' that is the BKP forum  :D

I'm building a guitar, and I have a tune-o-matic bridge for it. However I have a trem spaced miracle man (which I love) in my old guitar, which I would like to put in the new one. So my question is, will it still sound good even though the spacing is wrong? I know it won't be ideal, but I really like the pickup, and I can't really afford a new BKP in the project budget  :(

Thanks

Naren

Well, it would probably sound fine...though there may be some balance issues that only the trained ear will be able to hear...There are different spacings for a reason. I think you will still probably be pleased. This is no Jedi mind-trick (!)   [/quote]

I also should have mentioned that you may want to ask Tim. He'll definitley have answers for you. Unlike I, who was mainly relying on past information  that I'm not sure is exactly accurate.

Go for it, it will probably sound fine. Worked for Eddie, but in the reverse (Gibson pickup in a Floyd Rose guitar).

Try it and see what you think.

If anything I think it may sound a bit better.  Looking closely at my guitars that have tunomatic bridges, the one where the pole pieces line up best is my Jackson - which has a Duncan TB6.  The 50mm spaced Nailbomb on my Les Paul spacing has the top E string lined up on the outer ¼ of the pole piece.  If each pole piece was 1mm towards the outside they'd be pretty much dead centre.

I've just gone & measured the width of the strings on my Les Paul & my Warmoth strat w/wilkinson trem (measured above the  pole pieces of the rear coil of the Bridge pickup) - to my eye there's only ~½mm between them.

IMO if the pickup is at the correct height then nobody would be able to tell the difference.

FWIW I'm going to replace the TB6 with a 52mm Holy Diver fairly soon :)

 I just contradicted myself

I guess I meant the emphasis to be on the 'if anything' - any benefit would be theoretical, but I don't think you'll be complaining either way - the MM is a really good pickup...

Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure it would be useable, otherwise I'd have to skimp elsewhere to save money for a new bridge pickup.

And don't worry people, your jedi mind tricks don't work on me

On second thoughts, credits will be fine.

No! Must-re-sist.

Well Padawan it does work - a friend used some of my old strat pickups in a homebuild with a tune o matic and he it sounds cool

But then he was playing with the force....

Empire Strikes Back? Did I get the right film (for Elliot's quote)???

I think the regular warpig would be Luke Skywalker then tbh - He delivers a good thrashing to the enemy the whole way through the trilogy, but gets crushed by the lightning bolts from the pole pieces of the custom ceramic warpig in the end :drink:

LOL

My son is a SW fanatic, which is the only reason I know the dialogue of the 3 new movies; I think they're awful!
