The Mississippi Queens( A Question for Tim and others )
« on: July 29, 2006, 10:43:27 PM »
Hi Tim and others,
Donovan of Librium Guitars said you might be able to help me out with choosing some pickups. Donovan is going to modify and upgrade my guitar a bit soon and he strongly recommended BKP pickups.
Im new to BKP, thinking about getting some installed into my ES335.
The problem is i dont know which i want. I like the sound of The Strokes, Interpol and Placebo.
I was thinking either Mississippi Queens calibrated set, or Stormy Monday for neck with cover and a Mule for bridge without cover.
Can anyone help me out here with advice? Never heard the Mississippi queens, though ive found a few clips of the mule and stormy mondays.

Thanks alot,
E.C:H

the M. Queen is a p90, so if you can find clips of the bkp90's , or know what a p90 sounds like, then you've got it.  i have a set of queens in a les paul and they are great pickups.  they have sweetness in abundance for clean tones , but they can kick out agression when you need it.  i suppose they basically have a large dynamic range, which i think is the ideal for a pickup.  they react to what you put into them.  stroke them and they purr, hit them and they bark/scream!
cry HAVOC!! and let slip the pigs of war!!!

hello, im a big fan of the mules.....the new unpotted version is one to look at,as the previous fellow said there is a difference between p90s and h/buckers ,some folks like to have one of each on a guitar so the bkp world is your oyster!........i have just  put a set of missisippis on  my guitar and was surprised how good they  sound ,even by bkp standards.

If you want to keep a bit more of the semi accoustic sound, you could look at Stormy Monday's too.  I am putting a set of unpotted SM's into my 335.  Unpotted Mules would give you more drive and a bit thicker sound.  MQ's have a great sound and would give you more of a 330/Epiphone Casino sound but with a lot of drive.  If you were to go this way, there is a version of the MQ designed for hollow and semi accoustic guitars called the Manhattan.
So many pickups, so little time

There's been a few forum members that have put a Stormy Monday bridge and a MQ neck in ES guitars. Should be a great combo for what you want.

I'd say go with the MQ's, I've heard almost all of BK's pickups and those always seem to surprise and impress me the most with their sound and versatility. Also you mentioned Interpol as a band you liked, one of the guitarists uses an Epi Casino with P-90's as his main guitar (the other uses a Les Paul).

Hi Mister Crowley,
Yes thats exactly what i was thinking. aswell as in the strokes, one guy uses Gibson P94's. So ill go with the MQ's. Love the P90 sound.

Hi, a little late in on this one   but I'm gonna fall in line with the rest of the advice and say MQs...........if you have any reservations go for a Mule or Stormy Monday bridge and MQ neck, awesome combo.

Hi Tim,
Yes that sounds nice too.. Which of the 2 pickups have most output? Mule or Stormy monday? If i do the MQ neck and Mule or SM bridge then i would like the bridge pickup to be a bit rougher and hotter than the MQ in neck. I think maybe the bridge pickup should be without cover?

Regards,

Mule is hotter with more mid punch, having it open with give it a touch more edge too.

I have a Gibson ES-137 (similar to a 335 but looks more like a 175) tha I think is begging for some MQ's.  I went through a lot of semi-hollows before I settled on the one I bought.  Acoustically it's the best sounding semi I've ever played...very resonate and deep but that same resonance and depth sounds muddy with all of the humbuckers I've tried.  Add that I use 14-68 strings and tune down a 4th and it's tough.  The string/tuning combination works great on many of my guitars (most with humbuckers but a few with P90's) and I really want to find something that properly compliments the natural tone of this guitar.  Now I just need to find a set in the US.
Maximum volume yields maximum results.
