Apologies if you really, really hate them but I just dug out the old Zoso album (Stairway...) after having not listened for ages. Got to say it still floats my boat!  :D

Page aint really that great an axeman if you ask me, he seemed too coked out on this record compared to some of the other stuff, cant really explain what I mean...

When the Levee Breaks has to be one of the coolest songs ever.  8)

:D Sorry have to disagree. Page was a great player, not a clean one mind, but great non the less. His song writing abilities are still unmatched & his playing on songs such as Stairway, Rain Song to name just two is outstanding & original [ in context of the music he was making ] There`s no one in the last 30yrs on guitar that`s done as much varied types of playing unified under one banner  [ Heavy/ Metal,Rock ] That includes Vai, Satriani, Blackmore, EVH etc

When The Levee Breaks is a cover song, ya know ... :)

I think Pagey is brilliant, as a player, producer, and 'appropriator' of other people's material!!

Oh yeah, hanve to agree on the variety issue, theres no one like him for  doing different styles.

I just feel that some of the riffs come across as "lazy" when compared to the riffery of the earlier stuff like Communication Breakdown? Maybe he was on speed instead of coke back then, lol!

Really, a cover? I thought they'd just stolen that one line from an old blues track?

I have the Page and Plant cd from about 10 years or so ago and love that! He's still got that flair for exhibitionistic rock.

PS JT... James Blunt is rhyming slang around here

Led Zep Defines classic rock for me, the killer riffs, wailing vocals and crazy guitar solos. I really really rate Page as he can compose some brilliant music and he has the whole package, one of my fave pieces he did is Bron Y Aur, a really awesome sounding solo acoustic song off physical graffiti.
Immigrant song anyone?

Page is one of my favourite players, dont really care if hes a bit "sloppy" I think thats what is part of his style and it beats listening to shredders any day =D I think my favourite Zeppelin albums are Coda and Led Zeppelin I. The guitar tone on Darlene is so good, any ideas what gear he used on that?

Led Zep is awesome and, frankly, for all that's it's been played until our ears go into fatigue from the first note, "Stairway" is a brilliantly composed (and recorded) song.  A gem on an album of gems (though for whatever reason I'm not as fond of "Misty Mountain Hop" or "Four Sticks" as I am of the other tracks).

In terms of Page, I think he's the sloppiest guitar hero ever :) but I don't care about technical precision as much as I care about performance and Page is/was a great performer. And a great songwriter, with a great ear, and that boosted what I think was his best unsung skill: that of producer.  I can listen to the early albums all day and think, "How the hell did he think to do that in 1971?", and then, "Technically, how the hell did he do that in 1971?"  Led Zep albums would never have been Led Zep albums without Page at the helm as producer.  And, frankly, for those of us who were there :), the incredible cohesion and vibe of Zep's official "live" output owes a great deal to Page's production talents .... :)

I die for the live version of "No Quarter" on the Song Remains the Same soundtrack album.  Fantastic.

Incidentally, there was a great cover of "No Quarter" by Gov't Mule on 17 April 2002 at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, beginning of the second set. Worth tracking down a live recording, IMO.
EDIT: OK, you can get an MP3 of that from here. Only an audience recording (albeit a good one) and not a soundboard, but the excellent performance makes up for the lack of audiophile qualities! :)

The fella that used to run Fret Music in Shirley, southampton, used to kick out people if they played Stairway. He said at onetime he'd hear it 9 or 10 times a day, no wonder he went mad with rage.

:D Actually that gag "No Stairway etc was very old. Holiday music in the late 70`s had a sign on the doorway which read. "Anybody playing Stairway to heaven, All right now & Smoke on the water will be ejected   from the premises !"

It ment i had nothing to play when i tried out any  of  the  guitars !!!

As for my fav Zep song  for me it`s Ten  Years Gone from  Physical Graffitti

I'm not sure what my actual fave Zep song is .... Maybe "Over the Hills and Far Away"?

Besides the live "No Quarter" on Song Remains the Same, I was totally blown away by the live versions of  "The Ocean" on the DVD and on How the West Was Won; never rated the studio version, really, but the live ones were great.  There's a great live "Communication Breakdown" on that BBC set, as well ....
