I remember seeing a funny ebay auction where there was some kinda tomato which was shaped like Pete Townsends face/head. I cant remember where I saw it but it was hilarious. And now for some classic Monty Python -

:D I`ve heard Pete Townsend tell a story about one of there [ The Who ] early American TV appearances & i think this is the one.

They were tipped off that the presenter was going to crack a few jokes at there expense so Mooney decided he was going to have the last laugh & packed the bass Drums & risers with dynamite !

When they got to the smashing up of the equipment mooneys drum tech threw the switch.....BANG !! the band had to be taken to hospital afterwards to have shrapnel removed from there backs as the cymbals were blown apart !!

Didn't Keith actually pay some taxi guys in NYC to block off a street so he could throw TVs out the hotel window without hurting anyone?

lol, dunno if anybody saw Top Gear on Sunday, but roger daltrey was explaining to jeremy clarkson that apparently throwing the TV from the hotel into the swimming pool was harder than it looked, as the plan was to keep the TV working until it hit the water

shows these rock n roll yobs aren't so dense after all :D:D

I think that Keith got a piece of cymbal in his head too- he is flat out on the floor in the clip. I love the way John keeps on playing-he liked his guitars too much to smash them up I think.

lol yeah, although he doesn't seem to quite fit in with the others... the others were a little more 'active' on stage, whereas he just played (very well might i add)

he may have been 'the quiet one' but he still died age 57 in a cocaine binge with a hooker...
The story I heard about the explosion was that they did it in rehearsal with one charge of gunpowder but that was a bit weak. So before the show, keith put in an extra charge, and so did the stage manager, and maybe some other people did too (It's been a long time since someone told me this story) but nobody told anyone else about it, so when it exploded it was way more powerful than anyone thought

There's an old clip of Moon playing drums out there somewhere off his face on Rhino Tranqs'! His roadie sees him flagging badly and his head dropping and quickly injects him in the foot with adrenalin and he springs back into life!! It's mad stuff but very funny! I have it on video from a documentary years ago called 'Platinum Rogues'

That clip ( not the one Johnny iis talking about but the one in the original post) can be seen in the Kids Are Alright" DVD. t is worth getting if you are a fan of the Who.

I beleive that indeed the original speciqal effect was a little uninspiring

Unknown to Moon the studio staff added extra powder to rectify this, however Moon also decided to upgrade the effect (unknown to everybody else).

Fo once it wasn't completely Moons fault.

I remember a story about him, being told not to smash up any more hotel rooms as the Holiday Inn where going to ban the who from the complete chain of hotels.

Apparently Townsend obtained a promise to desist from the smashing sprees. However the next day he obtained a toolkit and dissassembled everything in the room, laying everything out neatly on the floor.

This apparently caused greater trouble as as nothing was actually broken insurance could not be claimed.

I think my favourite Who number was their 2nd single Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere. Although it lacked the polish of their later material it had so much raw energy especially live. When it was recorded it was felt necessary to add a piano (the great Nicky Hopkins **) to make it a little more 'commercial' - even so when the master tapes were sent to Decca in America they thought that the tapes were faulty because of the distortion and "strange noises". Not surprising I suppose when you consider what other music was popular in 1965 when this was recorded.

This clip was from one of their many Ready, Steady, Go appearances - Keith was obviously on 'uppers' and not gorilla tranquilisers for this session :) .
