Hi this post is to just ask a simple question, does anyone know how Zappa got such an amazing tone? this is because I have heard lots of theories on how he got such sustain and controllable feedback. I heard that he had special pickups in his guitar, if so does anyone what he would have used in his red SG guitar? cos it sounded phenominal. I've heard that he had all his guitars customised with different electronics to a normal guitar. What do you all know out there? I'd love to know how he got that sound, as it's my favourite tone from any electric guitarist that I've heard.

But as you are fairly new, the SG had a mod that boosted the guitar output-by the use of a circuit built in though I cannot recall the exact details but it gave the guitar up to 18db extra I seem to recall.18db is a huge increase but I am fairly sure that that was right. Can't answer about the pups though.

They likely were Carvins. Will have to do a bit of search about that ...

Isn't the picture of Dweezil (not Frank) using his SG/Les Paul reissue? I believe he would not use any of Frank's guitars on the road as they are too valuable. Dweezil uses Cornford amplifiers.

It appears from the article below that one of his guitars might not have been a Gibson:-

-The “Baby Snakes SG,” was Zappa’s main guitar for the latter part of the ’70s. The guitar is not actually a Gibson, but rather the creation of “a guy in Phoenix,” who made his way backstage and sold the guitar to Zappa for $500. Though its playing feel is a lot like a Gibson SG’s, closer inspection reveals such non-Gibson details as a 23rd fret and some nifty inlays and ornamental woodwork. Luthier/electronics maker Rex Bogue—the man who Zappa also tasked to bring Hendrix’s charred Miami Pop Festival Strat back to life—added various delights to this guitar, such as phase switches and an onboard preamp (Bogue passed away in 1996). Great googley moogley! Go to guitarplayer.com to see Dweezil Zappa run you through this guitar’s tones while plugged into his dad’s infamous Pignose amplifier.

The SG in the pic isn't either of Zappa's famous SGs, he wouldn't take it out on the road. Rex Bogue was of course the man who made John McLaughlins famous and beautiful doubleneck.
Here's a pic of Zappa's guitars, the Bogue is, I believe, on the bottom left (even though it does say Gibson on the headstock!)...

And McLaughlin with his Bogue double neck...

McLaughlin's double neck ain't worth shitee now, it fell off a bench back in the 70s and broke in two. Sad for such a beautiful and unique guitar. Luckily Ibanez made (and have just reissued) a less elaborate version, and that -IS- very expensive!

Some things I know about FZ's sound:

He sometimes used a Barcus Berry contact transducer in the neck of his guitars, this allowed him to have the sound of the plectrum mixed with the pups.

He used a pignose amp in the studio (as can be seen from the DZ video mentioned above). That active circuitry did a lot for the sound - amazing.

He also used Marshall 100w heads and JBL equipped cabs (no other detail)

He used metal picks (latterly) and liked to tap the nick with his pick sometimes. I have heard that chap out of the Meat Puppets so something similar. It is a sort of tapping thing but sounds a bit weirder. Plus FZ used to pluck at his strings with his pick (imagine pulling a hair with your thumb and 1st finger). Get "Does Humor Belong in Music" on EMI DVD and you will see his technique up close.

Here is an extract from an article I saved ages ago - I can't find the link anymore:

Frank Zappa played two custom Strats on the Broadway the Hardway tour. One was the blonde-finished instrument that also appears on much of the Guitar LP. It consists of a heavy Fender Stratocaster body, a custom neck made by Performance Guitar, a Floyd Rose tailpiece and Seymour Duncan pickups wound for an 8-k boost. Strings are Ernie Ball Stainless Steels.

Except for its lighter-weight body and dark brown finish, the other Strat is virtually the same. Both axes include a custom active electronics circuit developed right at Zappa's Utility Muffin Research Kitchen.

"It's got a gain stage and two parametric EQ circuits built into it," Frank explains. "The pots give you variable frequency selection and variable boost/cut at different frequencies. And then there's a screwdriver adjustment for the Q of the filter. That allows you to tune right into the feedback point of any room so you can really control what you're doing with feedback."

On tour, the guitars went through a pair of Carvin heads and a Roland GP-8 effects processor for Zappa's clean sound. His dirty sound was provided by four Marshall heads: 200 and 250W. Most of the speaker cabinets for these heads were placed and miked beneath the stage for better isolation. In addition, Zappa used a single 50W Marshall head and cabinet for onstage monitoring of his distorto sound.
