More idiotic questions
« on: August 22, 2006, 01:57:26 PM »
:-) im sure im turning into the retard of the bkp forums, but im glad for the title lol

Question is, im just replacing my pickup springs as i installed the wrong ones about a year ago (taken me this long to be bothered to change it)
Whilst the pickups are out... i know people will answer "try it ourself" but does it make alot of difference which way the polepieces are facing? im using a miracle man set and at the moment have the poles facing (neck facing the neck and bridge facing the bridge) would that sound about right?

And whilst were talking about pole pieces, is it "safe" to adjust the polepieces with a screwdriver? raise them, lower them etc? i dont want to mess with it in the meantime just incase lol, i love you guys.

Stew

As far as I remember and have read before(i think in here ) humbuckers are designed to have pole pieces on the bridge nearest the bridge and on the neck nearest the neck, as for adjustink them yes should be fine thats what there for, I think the only time you have to be careful is on vintage or older ones where the wax has dried hard inside

That aint no Les Paul!!

When you get a custom guitar you can have whatever features you want.  Thats definatly got some scallops, i would guess its only got the last few frets done but obviosly i have no way of knowing that.  It would just be a crime to scallop the whole neck on something that nice.

Anyway, the question.

I am fairly sure Tim designs his pickups so that the adjustable polepeices are on the outside coils.  There is a slight difference if you turn them round, very slight.  No ones gonna mind if you want them the other way.

I though that at first but its definatly the whole fret, but i bet its deeper on the high side.  It can actually work quite well to do a subtle scallop under the high strings of the top frets that blends into the normal fretboard.

The peavey wolfgang had the neck pickup rotated so the polepieces where away from the neck as apparently EVH prefers his neck pickups with that orientation.

I have to say that with the standard pickups in place the neck pickup sounds better that way around (I did rotate it at one point). When I get some mules for it, I think I will leave it rotated as to me there is a little extra bite to the tone.

It is Tim's Foster and is scalloped from the 13th fret up.  It is a really nice guitar to play, and is the one that convinced me to get a calibrated miracle man set and also to have Jonathan scallop one of my necks.
So many pickups, so little time
