Hey,

I just came accross Bare Knuckles pickups and have listened to some sound clips. I have to say they sound great. See, I'm a big Led Zeppelin fan. I have been looking for a perfect humbuckers for that classic rock / hard rock sound that can do some blues and metal (not so much). I almost bought a set of Gibson 57 classic and a classic +. What are some recommendations on humbuckers to get the Page sound. I was thinking about getting the Black Dog for the bridge. How about two Black Dogs?!?

I live in the U.S. and I was wondering how much would 90, 99, 170, and 190 lbs roughly be? Also - difference between spacing, 50 and 52 mm? Conductor 4 or braided 2? Sorry I have only been playing for almost a year. I have a Les Paul Custom :

Divide the UK price in £ by 1.175 (you don't pay tax on the pickups), then times the resulting figure by about 1.85 to find the cost in dollars.

The Black Dogs will get a great Zeppelin sound in a Les Paul. I have a pair in one of mine and loce the sound. I just got a set of covered Stormy Mondays and they cost me around $320. If you get open coils you will save about $35.

I recon the mules would be perfect for that Led Zep beefy sound, especially if you own a Gibson Les Paul Custom ; ) check out the audio clips on the forum.

I would say divide by 1.175, and then plug it into www.xe.com for the current exchange rate :drink:

Ok, I just listened to Bailz's "I believe in a thing called love" and hunter's "rain song" clips... they sound amazing. I think those two clips just sold me :D. I have been looking for Rain Song and Stairway solo clips...sweet tones!

Do pickup covers make any difference at all? I hear different opinions all the time...

and what about the 50 vs 52 mm spacing and 4 vs 2 braided conductor? Does it matter?

The answer is yes, but it's very subtle and most people don't notice it - but Tim alters the wind slightly for a covered pickup to make up for it...

Spacing, 50mm for hardtail, 52mm for trem

Wiring, 2 or 4 conductor makes no difference for regular wiring purposes - but 4 gives more advanced options, so it's worth taking 4 in case you want to go fancy later :drink:

I think you can use either Mules or BlackDogs. Mules might even be better for the Rainsong/Stairway stuff as they seem to be more open sounding. Blackdogs are also hotter, which can be convenient to drive an amp right.

You will love them both. Maybe a BD bridge and Mule neck combination would be cool.

Yeah, the Mule and Black Dog combo sounds really good right now. Can you inform me about "Calibrated" vs just the regular pup??

-Also if I chose to change out the pickups myself - god forbid I mess anything up - are there any great step-by-step guides out there for newbies?

The Calibrated thing is not really understood by most of us - there's differing opinions on it, and I'm still waiting for Tim to clarify :drink:

Changing out pickups is fairly simple, the most difficult part is actually the learning how to solder properly (luckily I did that in school)

Umm you'll probably want a 40 Watt Iron if you're planning to ground things to the back of a potentiometer, otherwise you'll find it difficult to get it hot enough

A calibrated set is when you purchase more than 1 pickup for a single guitar at the same time, and they are voiced to match their particular position on that guitar. You don't need to specify 'calibrated'; as long as BK knows you are putting X in the bridge and Y in the neck of the same guitar, and what the guitar is, etc, they will be calibrated to match.

Typically, though, calibrated sets refer to a matched set of the same pups in a guitar; ie, Miracle Man in the brige and neck of the same guitar.

Isn't the neck pickup calibrated to have a similar volume to the bridge pickup? As in, if you put a cold sweat in the neck with a nailbomb in the bridge it will be different than a cold sweat in the neck and a warpig in the bridge?

Thanks for the help everyone. Now it just boils down to either a Black Dog/Black Dog - Mule / Black Dog - or even a Rebel Yell / Black Dog combo...though the Mules and Black Dogs offer sound I'm after, by the sound clips.... too many decisions!
