Pickups for Les Paul Studio?? Help!
« on: August 25, 2006, 12:46:21 AM »
Hey Peoples,

Well here's the situation,
I wanna put some new pickups in my Gibson Les Paul Studio (currently stock 490R 498T) I find them a little thick through my Orange Rockerverb 50 Head and 4x12 cab.

So everybody seems to reccomend these BK pickups but which ones should i pick?  :?
I want something that suits rock, pop rock styles, a reasonably modern sound the likes of switchfoot if anyones heard of them. I dont want a metal sound or 80's sound.
Something that will give a great sound on my clean channel and a great sound on my dirty channel, i use a fair bit of distortion, but not excessive ammounts  :P
I need clarity and a full sounding tone...
So any thoughts guys???

Thanks for the help in advance!!!  :D

Sounds like you need to get yourself some Mules. Great cleans and dirty, and  very clear.

You find the stock pickups thick?  I find that combo in my LP Std to be very scratchy and thin - no depth of tone.

For what you're asking, I reckon Crawlers or Rebel Yells.

Crawlers are a bit more modern sounding than the Mule and just as versitile. It would be a good choise.

I reckon the Mule is perfect for what you want! I have a set of em in my Epi LP Custom and I play everything from blues to metal with this guitar and it sounds great for anything.

I'm a fan of the Crawlers, having replaced the same Gibson pickups you have with them.  That said, the Mules would probably suit your needs very well indeed.

I have a mule in my bridge and god it's just amazing! it sounds great with anything you put it through, it's very very versitile! Whats so awesome about it is that it sounds different at quiet and loud volumes, and the louder it gets the better it sounds. Get the alnico 4 magnet one, Tim himself recommended it and he was NOT wrong it's amazing.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, will have a listen to some of the demo clips and let you know what I end up putting in!
Cheers  :D

Hey Daveril1,

Yeah the rockerverb is the sweetest amp I've played!! (IMO)  :P
Love the sound, very full and big sound... costs an arm and a leg but definitly well worth it!

+ 1 for the Mules from me.

They made a 1996 Les Paul Standard sound like a late 1950's  tonal dream machine.

I also had the 490R and 498T combination in before going to a calibrated set of Alnico IV Mules.

It just sounds like it's worth about 10 grand more now !

 :D

Derek.
