Question about pickup voicing?

How on earth do you think of a tone in your head and build a pickup thats going to sound like that?? I mean how close has Tim got with the MM and various other models based on artists tones..

I mean can you just think of a EQ graph in your head and know which compents, magnets and wind styles will contribute to getting that tone?

or is it trial and error until you get a hang of things?

Probably a combination of experience and experimentation.

What tones are the pickups based on? Is there an article somewhere or am I not getting a referance to the names of the pickups?

Miracle Man - Ozzy Track
Warpigs - Sabbath Track
VHII - Van Halen Album
Black Dog - Led Zep Track
Abraxas - Santana track

etc.. etc.. they're not exact replications of those tones but they're obviously the inspiration for that style of tone

Lets not forget that Tim (for trade shows and prototypes) puts nearly every type of pickup into nearly every type of guitar at some point.

Also as a gigging musician of many years/styles experience and a craftsman, I would like to believe that he therefore has the comparison chart in his head, having heard or played all combinations.

Actually, I always think of the live Allman Bros. version on the Fillmore East album. But that also summons up a 60s PAF vibe that would be a touch more open than the Mules.

I've come to think of the of the SMs as the "mellow blues" pups, the Mules as the "harder blues" pups, maybe the Riff Raffs as the "edgy blues" pups, the Abraxas as the "hot blues-rock" pups, and the Crawlers as the "stompin' blues-rock" pups. :)

That's a very handy little summary!  I'm going to add it to my file of particularly useful info I've gleaned from the BKP forums.

And I think you're probably right about the origin of the Stormy Mondays.
