Custom 'Pig back from the 'spa'
« on: September 02, 2006, 04:47:47 PM »
Well, got Explorer/Custom 'pig guitar back yesterday.
My Teacher/Mate has a pro. setup friend and , long story short, wanted to change wiring/pots/switch in Explorer and only had 'large tip' solder iron.
Anyway, wtf let the guy do a job on the Explorer.

So, recently, bought the Mesa and had been playing the MM Pet through it. Now, yes Pet is awaiting BKP's, the DiMarzio's in the Pet are not 'HOT' but are custom made for some Petrucci guy so not horrible. Anyway, had the Mesa set up on Clean/Pushed and Vintage for good Blues and Metallica tones respect.

So, get the Explorer home and plug in. (no amp settings changed from 'Pet playing).

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, thought was gonna deafen myself! So, scrabble to turn down vol. (caught off gaurd by sonic assault on hearing) on guitar, it was BRUTAL!
Then figure might as well try the Clean/Pushed channel on the amp, WTF that WAS clean/pushed! The Explorer/Custom 'pig is F'ing amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No need to mention the 'demolition' tone that shook the walls when DID try the vintage channel (still not tryed modern channel).

Tim, you r DA MAN!

Now, had time to re-set the Mesa and been playing some very nice Blues this afternoon (all living creatures begged/threatened me NOT to go too gainy and allow for recovery   ) and the 'pigs sing like a one legged, out of work, southern African American whose dog just ran away with his wife

Thes 'pigs are amazing and those thinking they are simply METAL!!!!!!!! Either a. need to play with amp settings, b.buy new amp or c.go see a Ear/Nose/Throat doctor

For sheer gain brutallity more pro's should discover these things. They OUT EMG an EMG in spades due to their amazing grind which is 'orgasmic' and not 'sterile'.

Think of a gorgeous model. The EMG is faking it, the Custom Pig is a full on wall shaking 'GASM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Great set-up on Explorer too. Wanted pots/wiring/switch. Got fret dress,neck oil,pots,wiring,switch,sheild,set-up  :D

Happy days are here again (least, for me if not all other creatures in mile radius)

Ahh, ^ , and herein lies the problem.
I had been lulled into a false sense of security by the Americans raucus yet manageable din produced when striking a chord (be it power or otherwise).
Stupidly I had forgotten that some feindish mad scientists exist in the southern wasteland known as Cornwall.
Hence, when I was used to driving a very nice burbling V8 with nice tuning and manners, I then plugged in what can only be described by a Top Fuel Funny Car and NO I did not think to wear a helmet!
Suffice to say, my hearing reacted like a cat that had fallen from a branch into a cold pond!
Then, when my senses (forget about hearing as that is still somewhere in another village) returned I began to grin like a Publishers Clearing House Winner (btw, they actually exist?!?!).
Tim is somewhat of a demon in disguise. In fact, with all the scullduggery and lawless behaviour associated with the Cornish coast, I imagine he is soon to be indocturined into their Hall of Fame

haha thats awesome. So they are ceramic pigs then correct? Ive been lookin at a set of pigs for quite some time know (Warpig/Pig-90/either ceramic pig or alnico V) and am wondering how the ceramics sound in comparison to the standard Alnico V. In your opinion might they be alittle too 'compressed'/modern sounding for an oldskool 70's Sabbath tone?

Well, IMO, not at all.
Little more informed now (or feel it) with two diff. amps and several pups etc.
To be honest they are 'organic' which I mean to say is not too modern.
Wish I could be more def. but to be honest (to my mind) alot is in the amp.
Did Sab not use Orange?
Anyways, through the Mesa on Vintage mode (heck even pushed clean) can get very nice 'old skool growl'.
I had the orig. Gibbo pots switched for calib. CTS and now they do a helloflot more than just look good :)
I think the Custom Pig is a very shhhhhh pup. Guess it is not advertised as much.
Anyway, my 'standard' (if such things exist) 'pigs (in Custom SG) should be here end of month, can give better comparison then. But from memory I would say the Custom are abit more in the clarity dept.

^ Cool! I think Geezer used Orange and Tony used one on the Paranoid video but he usualy used a quartet of Laney LA100BL's for live and album work. So basicly theyre not very 'modern sounding pickups then? And by clarity you mean they are less muddy to the Alnico's?

Well, the Mesa has 6L6's in it but yes, on vintage channel I do feel it gives a very vintage sound but with definition. I would hate to say ANY BKP's would be 'muddy' eughhhhhhhhh LOL. I would say they have abit more clarity. They are still 'balls to the wall' and 'heavy', but notes/chords ring alittle clearer.
Very hard to describe with adjectives and comparing stuff. But, I believe they would do a very credible Sab tone (yeah forgot bout Laney, duh).
The Standard 'pigs , IMO, are more of a 'full frontal mechanical assault' and 'take no prisoners' (if on gain that is).
Very hard indeed to describe.
Let's say, Standard 'pig = full blown psycopath
Custom 'pig = may or may not gain from therapy :)

Looks like it's settled, the Warpig Custom is the most brutal pickup ever made.

That review has got me GAS-ing for a Dean Z with a Warpig custom and MQ combo.

Ceramic warpig on the way in my legra!

Looks like the neighbours are gonna get to hate me even more

The normal pig (one of which I already have) isnt the highest gain pickup out there, but theres nothing as full sounding or rich at high gain. Cant wait for the custom :D

Like to say, just kiddin' but boy is that guy touchy!!!!!!!!! Tis why I do NOT visit the EB boards anymore.

HATE sig. guitars, but DO like the 'Pet so gotta live with it :) Least it's 'antigue white' type finish so NOT easily recog. to 15yo's 'Ohh look a John Petrucci Model' BARF LOL
