Effects loop ?
« on: September 02, 2006, 05:20:57 PM »
I've just recenlty bought a Vox AC30 CC amp.

This is my first amp with an effects loop and I'm not exactly sure how to sue it.

Is it to bypass putting your guitar signal through a series of pedals before going into the amp and avoid any signal loss ?

I assume that if I use the effects loop I basically run a separate lead from the amp, to the pedals and back to the amp, and the guitar just plugs directly into the amp ....... ?

Do most people use an effects loop if the amp has it ?

Am I right in assuming that I use standard guitar leads to run the pedals through an effects loop ?

Cheers

Good question- this has sometime caught me out.I had an amp where the use of the loop would bypass the preamp- another I had didn't.One thing I did find was that the loop was better for modulation f/x rather than distortion or overdrive. It'll be interesting to see what others say.

The loop takes the signal from after the preamp section (send) and before the poweramp section (return). It is there to be able to insert certain effects after the amps preamp drive stage as some effects don't sound good before drive stages.

Normal usage is:

Effects like overdrive, compressor belong in front of the amp.

Effects that can be used either in front or in the loop:
Wah (but usually used in front)
Boost (usually in front, where it will push the input stage of the amp, however can be used in the loop as solo boost)
EQ
Chorus (usually after the gain stage)

Effects that belong in the loop (after overdrive):
Delays, Reverbs

I only ever use effects loops for things like chorus, flange, phazer, and all modulation pedals, I also mainly use an effects loop for echo, delays and reverbs, as it normally sounds purer and cleaner. Your amp is an absolute classic so even if you dont use the loop, it'll still sound amazing. As far as I know there's a way that a Vox AC30 can get effects in sterio! like sterio delay and modulations ect. I dont know much about that though, can anyone else help on that matter. I have a freind who manages to get a really nice sterio sound out of his Vox AC30, he uses the memory man deluxe delay/chorus pedal by electro harmonix, same as 'the edge' from U2.
