Went to see the Tony MacAlpine, Billy Sheehan and Virgil Donati gig in London. Pretty darn good. Sheehan was absolutely amazing. So was MacAlpine but his guitar was lost in the mix. Could have been the venue but it's not the first time I have noticed a great guitarist's sound get lost in the mix. I wonder if it's the constant desire to have a "warm" or "brown" sound? That type of tone may be a bit more susceptible to merging in the bass and bass drum?

What do I know? Nothing !!

It's probably a neck-through, which is why it is getting lost in the mix like that. Or, his pickup choice sucks. PDT_008.
MacAlpine ... Sheehan ... Donati: The majority of Steve Vai's band. You can't go wrong there!
If you like that lineup, check out Sheehan's amazing fusion band, Niacin.

I went to a Billy Sheehan bass clinic a few years ago and it was hilarious

It was as fun to hear his stories of being on the road as it was watching him play.

I also saw Macalpine do a clinic at the Musiscians Institute in Wapping and it was pretty amazing - had Mike Terrana on drums and he blew me away with his drumming ability

:D Surely it would be just a case of turning the guitar up through the P.A. system !

It wouldn`t make any difference how his sound was through his amp or what Fx he had on it if the sound guy at the front doesn`t have him up loud enough in the mix.....

He was loud enough, well at least I think so, I got hte impression that the high notes got through, but anything on the bottom 4 strings that just got lost.
