Easy on the Language Sambo
Pictured below is a wooden body dobro- some has chrome plated brass bodies

Basically the strings pass over the bridge which rests on a resonator cone, which is like a cross between a speaker cone and a car hubcap - made of thin aluminium. when the notes vibrate the cone resonates like a crude speaker and gives a rather distinctive tone- quite nasal and midrangy with a metallic clang to it.
Most Dobros have a single cone but some have 3 arranged in a triangle

Dobro was/is a brand name that has become synonymous with the type of instrument - a bit like Hoover did with vacuum cleaners
