To be honest my Fender HRDx has some nice clean/just breaking up kinda tones but needs a hotplate past volume 2 otherwise its just too loud for most stuff :lol:

Also he has started winding/selling his own pickups so probably thinks it inappropriate to contribute to what is now 'competition'. It's all personal opinion isn't it! I've spoken to Hayden about it and his preferences are different to Tims. Note I say different, not better. It's horses for courses!

Yeh I agree - even so I think he's very brave and will have to produce something very special to persuade guitarists to choose his pickups over BKP.

hmm...I always liked the lead tones. What about the cleans? Do you think a 100W might be better for the cleans? (as in a 100W superlead)

a 100w will definately give you more headroom for clean tones - depends how loud you're gonna be playing.

ever tried an AC30? - they have a gorgeous clean tone and respond VERY well to fuzzboxes.

Nah, never tried an AC30. They have some Custom Classics in Sound Control and Guitar Guitar in town. I've read some good things about the CC series, but then I've also read that they don't sound like the originals. I realise I should be trying them for myself, but I'm up to my eyeballs with work at the minute. Any opinions on either the CC or the old ones?

The classic AC30 is probably only really counts for about the 4 years up to 1967, due to ownership and different models being built for the US market and general wierdness.

From what has been written the current CC is pretty close to the original but with a greater range of sounds. Most of the sound issue seems to revolve around the tremolo circuit sounding different.

The guys over in the rickenbacker site are really enjoying the current AC30 range, especially with topboost and a booster engaged. Infact their only real issue (apart from the price of the when celesteon blues are installed) is it's too loud

You could consider hiwatt or even look an old selmer (treble & bass) both of which react well to pedals or even a Fender as they appear to have got their act together over the last few years.

Stay away from the Custom Classic AC30s, poor build quality and reliability on those things.

The reissue AC30 is a great amp - you can have chimey clean/crunch out of the top boost channel or alternatively slam a treble-booster pedal into the normal channel for some Brian May esque tones (yum).

One thing though, you really need to get the model with the blues for the best AC30 tone (imo). The other alternative is to stick some G12H-30s in there but don't use Greenbacks in an open cab (flubby bass) - I don't care for the reissue GB's in general.

As for an original, you should easily pick one up for under a grand. What you need to ensure is that it's not been ragged all over the place - the heat in an AC30 chassis means that some old ones have the wax dripping out of the transformers (not good).

Another route is to buy an oldie in need of repair and buy some repro transformers - I did this and used OEI iron, that was an AWESOME AC30 and just loved fuzz pedals (esp Big Muffs, yum!)
