I have a Roland Ready Strat/VG-88/GR-30/FC-200 setup; probably the most insane out-of-the-box guitar synth setup you can get. The newest version of the synth is the GR-33. (I got mine in '02, I think)
What are you looking to do, exactly? Modelling, or synth work?
The VG-88 is the Jaguar of modellers. The new expaned MIDI controller for the VG-88 is the GFC-50.
If you're doing synth work, either a GR-33/FC-200 combo, or a GI-20 and the rack mounted sound module of your choice.
If you're going to get and use both, you will need a GKP-4 or US-20, as well, to make your life easier.
NOTE 1: My MIDI setup takes up about 6' of floor space! These devices are HUGE!
NOTE 2: 13 pin cables are very delicate! My 13 pin cables die on me about twice per year, although they often get thrown into duffel bags and carried out to gigs. Don't expect them to last a lifetime, however; they won't.
