Bird Needs New Pickups
« on: September 15, 2006, 09:48:52 PM »
Ok well not immediately but Christmas at the latest, sooner if possible. I've been doing a bit of recording and the pups in the Yamaha sg are just mud compared to the IT equipped strat  and MM/Trilogy set in the Ibanez RT. The Yamaha sg is mahogany, with maple center piece (I think).

I've asked Tim & the forum about this way back (was going to go with Mules or Crawlers)  but since then there have been some new pickups released and a couple more on the way so I thought I'd ask again. This will be my main recording guitar. I want dynamics, clarity, definition, and versatility. From classic rock to metal and all those beautiful warm clean tones as well. For all out metal I've got the MM axe.  So what do you think :?:

Also curious about the upcoming Peter Green pickups

I've actually got a better one for her first album cover. So does anyone have any pickup suggestions

Sorry Bird, I've been watching this thread and I can feel your frustration!  Your daughter is just too cute.

Wish I could offer a useful suggestion, but my experience of the actual pickups is limited.  Based on your versatility requirements, I reckon you won't go far wrong with the Mules.  The Crawlers and (especially) Rebel Yells might be a bit too "rock" to give you the tones you want, especially the clean stuff.

Hard to tell from the photo which model your Yamaha SG is - some of them had through-necks, some set-necks, some bolt-ons, and of course the construction will affect the sound and choice of pickups.  It looks to me like a late-90s SBG500B, which would be a bolt-on, I think? :?

I reckon a PM to Tim would be your best bet.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I think Ratrod has Crawlers in his Yamaha sg and seems to like them. I like my Mules in my Epi LP. Classic rock to metal sounds like something Rebel Yells might be better for, though I've never played em.

I did play some VHIIs in a PRS last year at Music Live and they sounded very nice in that, hotter than my Mules with more of an edge and a bit brighter.

Yep, I got a Crawler set in my Yamaha SG. They work great. They will enhance everything you like about the SG and get rid of anything you don't like. It's perfect for classic rock and will do some wicked metal when asked to. These pickups are just as versitile as the Mules but there's more coming from the Crawlers. Don't worry about hte cleans. The clean tone is clean, very full and warm.

There are some other pickups that would go well with that guitar too: Abraxas V, if you wanna nail that tone when Carlos was still playing a Yamaha SG or Rebel Yells.
