oh cr@p... debit account problem. what should i do?
« on: September 18, 2006, 09:18:23 PM »
So I just bought a car cd player off ebay, thought I had enough money in my account but I checked online anyway and realised I didnt have enough.. but I thought I had £50.. so I looked at my account activity, apparently I paid out £30, but I know I didnt. Looked at the more detailed bit and it turns out I apparently paid "O2(UK)LTD PREPAY , SLOUGH" £30, but my phone has £2.69 on it. Means someones used my account to buy phone credit.

Any ideas what to do? Should I cancel my online banking thing immediately or leave it as "evidence" so to speak hahah. My dads away on holiday now so I cant speak to him about it till tomorrow so I'm lost

Cheers for any help..

although im not sure thats perfect evidence

Ring up your bank ASAP and tell them you've been a victim of fraud - explain to them the situation and they should be able to advise you on your liability. Make sure your card gets cancelled. The Police should be able to trace the number of the phone to the owner if your bank provides them with the necessary evidence.

Thats what I'm thinking, could easily be photoshopped etc. I'm gonna go to the bank tomorrow, and ring O2 to see if they know anything about it. You reckon it has anything to do with me using Paypal?

There's not much point doing a printscreen of anything for "proof" - the bank obviously will have a full record of any transactions made. Just do it if you think it would help you explain it to the bank when you visit.

In my experience.
Tell the bank it was NOT you. You will then have to fill out an affidavit for the 'fraud dept.' who will investigate. In the mean time (maybe a week) the money will be replaced into your account. Banks get this ALL the time so don't be surprised if they don't take the time to 'liase' with you on the proceedings, they will just take details and refund.

hehe, hope so. They didnt say anything about me getting refunded my money though so I'll have to tell em I want my money tomorrow! Afterall the purpose in putting money in a bank account is to keep it safe (well mainly to buy stuff off the internet for me but shh :P). Main thing thats pissing me off is that I'm gonna have to get a new paypal and get it all verified again if they decide to cancel my account.

Now for all this hassle I hope I get to listen to that cool hold music again tomorrow

Just got off the phone, sending a new card in the post soon and cancelling the old one, should get refunded soon aswell :D

Question is, will I have to re-do my paypal account because of the new card or is does it just work from debiting directly to the account? I cant remember how it works

depends if you verified through the debit card or through bank account.
TBH, confuses me. I was fine in States but since here have only tried paypal once and got ALL messed up (basically card etc. not jizing with bank think, and not willing to give direct bank details at this point).

I got dicked by card fraud once, to the tune of 2 grand!

The bank delivered the card to the wrong address, and as that house was now being squatted in, they managed to spunk the cash away inside four days. Whilst I was in Dublin.

Anyway, If you go to the bank with some kind of proof it wasn't you (In my case, there was a transaction by debit card on Botanic Avenue, Belfast, and a cashpoint withdrawal from an ATM on Grafton street, Dublin separated by two minutes!!) , or you kick up enough stink, they will always refund. That's why banks kick up such a wild stink about card fraud. It doesn't cost you. It costs them. Especially if they're a bunch of incompetent chancers who can't follow simple bloody instructions.

+1.  When you find them, hunt them down and behead them and you will have a new wall trophy for your money spent.

If it's a check card and you use it as a charge, you can get the charge cancelled usually just like a normal credit card.
