I'm looking to buy some headphones to use with my line6 toneport, budget of around £50, any suggestions?

I would go for a second hand pair of Beyerdynamic phones on Ebay. I got a pair 3 weeks ago (DT-100).

Another good set of phones. I considered these as well. I think it was because I seen Alan Partridge using the Beyerdynamics that sold it for me. Ah-ha! 8)

Closed ear.. I'd go with Sennheiser HD-280 Pro's. Nice isolation, comfy and economical. I think I paid $70 US for mine from a local music merchant.

Open ear... Sennheiser HD-580. They can be had much cheaper than the HD-600 that get touted as being some of the best. They are pretty damn near as good as the HD-600's, but cost less. These were used as the de facto standard for guys mixing classical orchestras a couple years ago. Lots of good reviews out there on the inter-web. HDs are good!

I had a pair that the wires broke on, but the design means you can unplug the wire and get a new one, and its SORTED again :)

I mainly use my Speedlink 5.1 headphones now, they sound fantastic for music (i have a line6 guitar port) and watching movies in 5.1 is superb on them, they were £55 (including the Dolby amp) ages ago, you can probably get better spec ones for that much now :)

Downside is they are a bit big and slightly heavy, plus you need the AMP.. upside is they sound awesome for any use (the built in mic is good too).. pretty useless if you dont use your PC for games and movies though :P

Personally I wouldn't go for DT-100s. These are sound technician "yes, there is sound coming through" standard cans and are popular as bulk buys in a lot of studios for some unknown reason. It's probably because BeyerD sell parts for all their cans so they are very economical for heavy use in a commercial setting. Dt-100s are OK for tracking duties etc but there's better to be had if you actually want to enjoy what you hear. I have DT-250s, which are closed back and sound superb. They isolate extremely well so are good for tracking vocals without can leakage too. The only drawback of closed-backed cans is that your ears can get quite tired and hot with prolonged use.

For some serious work I'd recommand a Sennheiser HD 265, closed, very flat response, perfect for monitoring.

Having tried a lot of different ones, I would go with HD 280 for closed. If you must have open ones try the AKG 240, I have seen these on eBay for less than $100, which is just about at your budget.

Most of the cheap headphones are just that - cheap. For value and sound the HD 280 is the best.
