Allparts shipment - PRS switching?
« on: September 21, 2006, 06:04:29 PM »
Received my allparts 5 way rotary switch today.

Basically it offers 4 rows of 5 way switching that can be wired independently.

The only understandeable diagram I could find for PRS-ish kind of wiring is this: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHH5L1101

Will these additional sounds (1. Inner and 2. Outer Coils Parallel) be the most valuable and distinctive it can get? What would you suggest to do and where can I find a diagram?

This switching goes into the Musicman Axis with a set of Rebel Yells...

You will need to reverse the orientation of the magnet in the neck pickup to get that to work properly.
When Tim makes pickups for PRS users using the 5 way switch he has to do the neck pickup slightly differently for the switch to work as intended

Hmm, thanks Feline, I didn't even realise that the neck HB is the wrong way round on the schematics, indeed indeed ...

Is there no way I could have in between single coil sounds via the 5-way switch without reversing the NPU?

Might be worth asking Tim for eaxactly what can be done

I dont have a schematic handy
the reason for the orientation of the magnets is so that when you coil split to inside coils you have a North and a South coil and the same with outer coils
This will allow those positions to be hum cancelling whilst having the guitar signals in phase electrically.

You can do it with stock pickups - but you have both the screw coils the same way round which many dont like the look of as it looks cooler to have them opposite ways round for symmetry - though it may fry your brain then figuring out which wire goes where as the colour coding for the two coils is reversed to what you'd expect

So roughly looking as per below for magnetic orientation

On a similar note (sorry for the hijack!), but is this neck pickup orientation the same as when Ibanez install their DiMarzios 'backwards' so the cable leaves the baseplate on the top left rather than bottom right (if looking at the guitar face on). Here's a JS1000 schematic that sort of shows what I mean (my Jem has this neck pickup orientation too)

I've seen pictures of Edward Van Halen with EVH/Axis prototypes that had the neck pickup with the screw coil facing the bridge.  So you'd be in good company if you just turned the pickup upside down (and adjusted the wiring accordingly)!

I suppose Ed just preferred it that way visually, because he was never using coil splits as far as I know.

I guess this issue applies to all guitars which are wired to use the 2 inner coils of a pair of humbuckers - I think my Double Fat Strat is the same.

let's say if I leave the pickups in the way they are now and just split them to use the inner coils in split, so

1 Bridge HB Series (normal=1)
2 Bridge inner coil and neck inner coil series
3 Bridge HB and Neck HB Parallel (normal=2)
4 Bridge inner coil and neck inner coil parallel
5 Neck HB Series (normal=3)

Would that be easy to wire and would that result in useful sounds? How is the Axis Super Sport wired actually? There the HBs are positioned normal (screw coils = outer coils)

Just turning a pickup around doesn't effect the polarity..............to change the polarity of a humbucker ala PRS and some of the Ibanez(Infinity I think)the neck magnet needs to be flipped.

Hm not really, as I want the 5 sounds of an Axis Sport with a normal Axis, but not with a 5 pos lever switch but with a 5 pos rotary (there is no slot for a fender type switch on an axis).

Anyone got an idea how to wire this?
