Pick-up suggestion?
« on: September 24, 2006, 04:17:41 AM »
Hey everyone, my apologies in advance if this is an incredibly tired topic, but it seems as though there are too many solid choices for me to pick by myself...

My set-up is a Schecter PT-Custom through a Bogner Shiva. Currently, the Schecter has EMGs (81 & 85)  in it, and I find that my tone is quite compressed. While I understand that this is one of the tonal characterstics of the Bogner, I would also like to see if I could get it to open up a bit.  I play in an indie/pop-punk band, but would love to also get that nice big metal crunch (but of course, while staying away from that ultra-compressed sound).  So with these things in mind, which pick-ups would you suggest?

edit - i love the tones on the following CDs:

Park - It Won't Snow Where You're Going
Park - Building a Better __________
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now
Name Taken - Hold On
Brand New - Deja Entendu

and on the other side of the spectrum...

Thrice - The Illusion of Safety, The Artist and the Ambulance
Emery - The Question
In Flames  (anything)
Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache, Alive or Just Breathing
Protest the Hero - Keiza
Saosin - Translating the Name, ST
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety

WITH FULL DISTORTION

Hey dude, nailbomb all the way. It can do anything from GnR and Zeppelin to Dream Theater.

I've played my nailbomb thru a Boss GT-8, and it simply doesn't get any better for that chuggy (but not sterile and compressed) metal tone. Or for anything, really.   :) :D

For the newer metal stuff (Killswitch Engage etc) you'd be better off with a Nailbomb.  I don't know the other bands you list so I can't say how suitable the RYs will be.
