I think this is silly. Massively over the top genre definitions are daft, but it's pretty useful to be able to describe in a couple words the ballpark something is in, even if just for reviewings sake, or to get it in the right magazine.

I'm trying to be polite and cause no offence, but i fecking hate genres and folks dismissing any particular music because of some arbitary genre classification (which is exactly what you did.)

It's a bit like placing Can in the catagory Krautrock, cos theyre German, but it really says nothing in regard to the music or subject matter.

If you want catagories try the phrase "similar to" 

Anyway back to some post punk funk with just a hint of modernist

And my point still stands, never aknowledging genres would make describing music quickly so vastly more difficult as to be ludicrous.

Genres tend only useful for those who are already immersed in that genre.

Power metal does that run @ 18V rather than 9V (better overhead) theyre arbitary terms and I'm sure there are so many flame wars as to what particular genre a band falls into (despite what the bands themselves think they are)

Yeah the Urban comment was to encourage a bit of normality for those of us who have no frame of reference in the apparently huge number metal sub genres (that often seem to be more important than the actual music.) Though thinking about it, it seems that "urban" may perhaps have even more sub genres than metal.

I just like music, some of it used to be called metal, some of it still is (I think) but for the most part it has loud guitars

Anyway it's back to Blue Cheer, I'm not sure if it's Proto metal, proto stoner, stoner, rock or psych but I like it.

If you gain benefit from sub genres thats OK but beware as some bugger will redefine them when you arnt looking

Took offense? I said it was silly. Then you got in with you're "I'm trying not to be rude" nonsense which, letsbe fair, sounded like "I want to be rude but I am short of a pair".

I'm afraid I just can't ever see that as anything but utter shite.

The number of times I had kids ask me at my old work "I'm just getting into xx genre, any cool bands I should check out?" was enormous, it's just an easy, fast convienient way of getting across an idea of what you're after. Instead of I'm after more stuff that sounds like, x band, x band and x band. It can get stupidly involved, of course, I see regular ads in Terrorizer for Scandanavian Pagan Folk Metal and the like which really push the realms of sense, but I don't see why there's anything wrong with having terminology to differentiate between Black Metal and Death Metal, Reggae and Ska, Classical and Baroque, Funk and Disco etc etc. If anyone can give me a reason why there is then great, but usually the best argument anyone has is "It just makes people closed minded or encourages people to nitpick what's what". Why anyone else being closed minded or belittling what other people listen to should have any impact on whether being able to classify music is a good thing or not is beyond me.

Aside from anything else, when I go into a independant music store looking for oddities at random, what the fuck section would I go to? :lol:

I just like music too, regardless of what it is (except power metal dragon slaying shite, obviously) but I again don't see why being able to define what group an artist falls into causes any issue there.


EDIT: Before you read any hostility in this, as you appeared to with completely jovial discourse earlier, I'm typing all of this smiling, just as I have said it to friends in the pub with a pint over the same debate  :)

I only find very broad genres useful you dont, thats fine I wouldn't know Black metal from death metal, but if I hear something i like I'll look them up and ask about them, the particular sub genre dosn't really matter to me (but thats my perogitive)

BTW I pretty much dislike all the 3rd rate Robert E Howard and HP Lovecraft imagary, but thats across many genres (being long in the tooth) ;)

Anyway this wouldn't even have rated a raise in pitch in a pub conversation..
