I quite like this Uli bloke's playing, but what on earth possessed them to let him sing?!!!

Especially with Klaus baby in the band - he's a fine, fine singer... what must he have thought every time he had to take a back seat to Roth's efforts?

It's almost like two different bands, isn't it?  There are Uli songs, which (mostly) he sings, and Klaus/Rudolf songs, which Klaus sings.  Quite surprising it lasted as long as it did, really.

listening to classical stuff on youtube to try to get some inspiration for gingataff's thread. only conclusion i'm coming to is that it's futile as it's all so good...

Greg Koch - Radio Free Gristle

He's not just a Fender demo guy and Hal Leonard author, he's a top notch writer/musician and this is one of my top five intsrumental albums of all time, containing "musical tidbits such as Hendrixian Herbs, Crumbs of the Kings, Caramelized Allmans (sic), Page Porridge, Beck Specks, Festering Chesterisms and a fiendish dose of Telecaster-Master soufflé."

I've just discovered The Arctic Monkeys album from last year, Humbug. I love the track Cornerstone. The lyrics are superb.  :D I've not really taken much notice of them before but the they've really grown on me.

I fully agree, though I will put up with it considering his amazing lead work

The jaw-dropping genius of John Williams

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEfFbuT3I6A

My mum had a record of him playing this piece back in the 1970s, I must have been 9 years old when I first heard this and even at that age I could tell that this man was something very special indeed. Watch and be inspired.

edit: no, not that John Williams

Another enthusiastic 'reprise' to Deep Purple ;  specifically remembering 'Stormbringer' ( the last Deep Purple album that really moved me ).   Did anybody else think that the end track 'Soldier Of Fortune' was a spine tingling slice of David Coverdale at his career best ?  :)

It's the best vocal he's ever done, IMO.  When I was about 15 I used to sit in my room singing along loudly (probably with the rest of the family sniggering outside the door, now that I think about it  :? ).

Soldier of Fortune is one of my all time favourite songs.....

Danny and the Champions of the World - Henry the Van

Makes the wife think about her old MG and makes her sad  :(  Good song though.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

after nearly buying it many times, i finally decided to give Black Sabbath's Born Again a try.  hmmm.  Gillan certainly puts in the effort, but the production is so awful it's hard to tell what's going on behind him!  really bad guitar sound.  i think the songs are good enough, but it's hard to listen to.  it kinda sounds like an old demo.

I've been paying attention a lot more to his lead after your comments. I've owned Tokyo Tapes for years and never really noticed on that... but with the early studio albums I got recently, it's made me listen to it more closely... and wow, he is/was a hell of a guitarist.

(And I've got used to his voice!)
