John Martyn - Solid Air

Call me an old hippy, I don't care. John Martyn was a god of guitar, a true innovator and a songwriting genius.

You are an old hippy.

I always remember seeing John Martyn on things like The Old Grey Whistle Test and thinking he was mighty cool, but I never actually bought or listened to any of his albums.

I'm going to listen to Solid Air on Spotify NOW!

I saw him at Newcastle City Hall in about 1992 when he was irreparably drunk and drugged up. He was brilliant, one of the most entertaining gigs I've ever been to. Pity he never got more recognition, I think the music press and his record companies didn't know which pigeonhole to stick him in.

You need a copy of Solid Air, Philly :D

I never got to see him (apart from OGWT etc), but I supported his wife at a Uni gig in the early 80s. She did two sets, and I did a warm-up set before each. Unfortunately she was a little worse for wear, and the audience had died completely by the time I went on for my second set. She was utterly brilliant a few months earlier though, supporting Loudon Wainwright III.

Well, I did indeed listen to it on Spotify last night.  Obviously it's not an "instant" sort of album, but I liked the sound of it very much, it has a very intimate feel (hmmm, does that sound a bit dodgy?  :? ).  Sounds like it could've been recorded yesterday.

The British Gas adverts every 3 tracks did break the mood a little though....

This is why the chicks dig it BIG TIME when there's some soft lighting and alcohol. Recommend you get a copy without adverts though!

Well, I've got the soft lighting (40w bulbs are cheaper to run than 100w...)

.........not much chance of any chicks finding themselves in my house though.  :(

I keep meaning to buy Comes Alive, Frank. I have done since 1979 or so, but I've never got round to it. Mebbe this is my ritual "Andrew's Christmas Pressie" (buy an album while getting other people's pressies) this year - thanks for reminding me! :D

For the full 1970s effect you should probably stock up on Vesta beef curry, instant mashed potato, flared trousers and lava lamps and arrange for everyone in the country to go on strike.

We can probably manage the strikes, in the not-too-distant future....

Always preferred the Vesta Chow Mein (with deep-fry crispy noodles!) and Beef Risotto to the curry, but I know where you're coming from.  I want Angel Delight too.  And Nutty bars.
