The new Mastodon album Once More Round The Sun is brilliant. Cannot wait to go see em live in November. Chimes at Midnight and The Motherload are the stand out tracks for me. The only one I'm not too keen on is the last track, just a bit slow paced.

I've had it a couple of weeks but only now listening to it for the first time.  Like all their albums, it'll take a few listens to grow on me but as always there are some great little riffs and melodic moments which really jump out.  Excellent band.

The new mastodon album is pretty good but I prefer The Hunter and Crack the skye by quite a bit.

Also looking forward to seeing htem live at the end of the year \m/

Right now I'm listening to dark psychedelic trance and feel like I should be playing Mortal Kombat or Unreal Tournament

I can't get into The Hunter at all bar a few good songs. Crack The Skye is probably one of my favourite metal albums ever though, just so good. I actually think The Hunter is probably their weakest album.

They're a bit too doomy for me.

Certainly entertaining in small doses, but after a short while all that slow, low rumbling makes me feel uncomfortably like I might need the toilet.  Definitely wouldn't listen to them on public transport....

I have the same problem with Electric Wizard. Love doomy/stonerness. But it's just too doomy and fatiguing.

Likewise.  I love the musical genre, but I'm most comfortable with the less intense, more melodic end of the spectrum.  Basically I'm a lightweight. :undecided:

This is an interesting read http://thequietus.com/articles/14305-electric-wizard-new-album-interview

CONAN are just low and heavy but it has the tempo. So damn groovy, how can you not swing from side to side listening to it?

Richard Thompson - Acoustic Classics

Just for a break from the heavier stuff.

I really like Thompson, I think he's unique as a guitarist and songwriter.  But I need to be in the right mood to listen to him.  That's enough of that for now.

Is that true, or just a slight bit of exaggeration for dramatic purposes?

Whatever the numbers, it sounds like he's made a hell of a lot of albums.  I wonder if anyone's actually collected them all?

That actually is no exaggeration, he really is such a weird mad man. Here is his wiki discography.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckethead_discography Just reading the first paragraph makes you shake your head. Total solo album play time of 59 1/2 hours....the heck.

To be fair, it really is not all good. I find he can easily drift into mindless metal riffage that goes nowhere, but he also often does very cool and unusal things. Very skilled and versatile player.

Reminds me that I should listen to the Thanatopsis stuff of his again...

Thanks and wow, it really is 98 albums!

Having made that comment above, I realised I have about 70 Frank Zappa albums (which is nowhere near a complete collection!) and about 60 Wishbone Ash albums.  So unless I'm the most obsessive record collector on Earth, I guess there probably are people with the complete Buckethead discography....!

I haven't heard much Buckethead, and I wouldn't know where to start, but what I have heard I quite liked.  It wasn't the unlistenable shred I probably was expecting.
