The Final Showdown (Tube Amp Combos)
« on: September 26, 2006, 08:04:22 PM »
The time has come, Waitrose has supplied me with the money, now it's time to blow it on a new amp :D .

Most of you know what i am looking for, metal amp, preferably one with great thrash tones.
I would also like some nice cleans.

I have narrowed it down to these 2. Have not heard a bad word about them, which is why i can't decide, which is why i came here haha.

Bad thing is i can't try before i buy with both these amps, so i'm having to rely on other peoples opinions, not the smartest idea! But it's the only way.

TO ANYONE WHO HAS ONE OF THESE AMPS PLEEEEAASE COMMENT IN THIS THREAD OR SEND ME A PM.

Randall RG50TC - £371.91 inc. post + 4 way footswitch
Laney LC50-II --- £390.00 inc. post (no footswitch  :( )

Also, can anyone tell me what the build quality on these amps are like? If not these amps then just the company in general.

Cheers, Joe.

randall. if the lc50 is anything like the lc30 i tried, it's not great. it's a vintagey amp, along the line of a fender.

dunno about the build quality on the randalls though, I've only tried it (ditto most everything else I talk about) in a shop, it'd have to be pretty unreliable to fail there...

I have a Laney VC30 which is put together quite well.Wouldn't suit your taste (yes I know you are looking at an LC30). Do I remember Sambo having a Laney LC amp?

Well i think i'm going for the Randall, they have a reputation for making some great metal amps!

^ aye, I vastly preferred the vc30 to the lc30. The lc30, when cranked, sounded a bit like it was about to fall apart...

EDIT: bear in mind, the marshall dsl401 is almost in your price range (it's about £400)- it's pretty decent for the price, if by thrash you mean megadeth etc- it's worth a try too, if at all possible.

Yeah i took that into consideration before, but i thought it was pricey for what it was, and Marshall arn't really the best amps in the world if you know what i mean. Also i have a Marshall now and i would like a change.

And in some of the reviews i read on the Randall, they said the Randall sounds quite Marshally.

Of those two, for metal, I'd get the Randall.  Certainly different to the Marshall too.

the LC is a good wee amp, especially if you get a cheap secondhand one, but definately not what you want for thrash metal.

a headphone jack broke off inside my Randall that i had, when i opened it i was pleasantly suprised to find it was put together  well, and this was the el cheapo Dimebag sig combo.

Should be good for metal, and L-O-U-D

Id take it over the Laney, and the DSL401.

good luck, i trust you have read the www.harmony-central.com reviews? Some are BS but its a good read as long as you dont take everything as the gospel ;)

Nah i havn't read those reviews, but i generally don't like reading many reviews because they all have a bunch of tw@ts rubbishing the product.

until recently i had an LC30 II, it is not, at all, a metal amp. I loved it, but I used it for smaller wedding gigs and stuff, covers most rock and pop fine and I found the clean channel very transparent and easy to find sounds with, but it really isn't suited to aggressive hi-gain sounds.

I've said it before about HC, and I'll say it again. If it's american, it gets big praise. If it's not, it might get a fair hearing. But if it's an american brand and constructed elsewhere, particularly China, it'll get rubbished for no other reason than that.

Damned whorehopping patriotic horseshite.
