Hi,

Does anyone have some recommended practise amps? :) Marshall, Kustom and the like... Amps that provide a good tone and could also be good for home recording?

i used a microcube for 9 months when i didnt have an amp and it was pretty damn convincing for the price.. best cheap practice amp i've played.

If you are after a valve amp, then 10W will be far too much juice for a practise amp.

Personally I don't think you can do much better than a Matamp Minimat, available in 2W or 4W flavours and with either 6V6 or EL84 valves, plus customisable tone tweaking, and your choice of finish. There's a head to head comparison on the forum here:

or visit www.matamp.co.uk for the official spec. Great toneful amp which is suprisingly versatile considering it's minimal 3 control setup.

Failing that there is the Cornford do two practise amps depending on your budget, and there's always the Zvex Nano for a bit of wacky 1/2W valve dirt.

A friend of mien got an Epi VJ combo and a Digitech RP80, and the sound out of that combination is amazing! The VJ really "dedigitized" the RP80, as much as I'm thinking of getting a VJ and a few dist stompbox for praticing :P

The Epiphone Valve Junior has also been getting great reviews for the price. Then there is the old tried and tested standby that will cost the most of any of these, a Fender Champ.

A classic champ goes for around $1,000 nowadays.

Hi Twinfan,

That's right, I have an Epi Valve Junior set up at home for practise and recording. I also teach a lot in local schools and their amps are usually kaputt or they don't have any on site so I'm looking for recommendations on practise amps at around 10 watts. I should have mentioned that they would need to be solid state for portability. The VJ is definitely not for lugging around schools though as a valve amp it is relatively lighter I guess. So it's tranny quality 10 watters I am interested in buying to accompany me to schools with my Squier Strat!!! Thanks for the interest,
