I use just a regular (Guitar) PODxt for both guitar & bass, there's stuff for acoustic's on there, and some have even used it as a vocal pre-amp. I tried a Bass V-Amp 2 a while back (basically to get an SVT with an 8x10 cab singing), but I was amazingly non-plussed about it's tones.
All I did was find an amp model that's nice & beefy (like a Plexi or the HiWatt, or even a Fender BassMan), choose a cab (I like 4x12's for bass, though there's a 4x10 and a 1x15 cab on the regular PODxt), dial in a nice tone, be it clean or slightly driven and away you go. If it sounds good to you, then work with it!
It's a really versatile little tool, with some really nice tones available to those who twiddle!
