Mule and MQ have arrived - with review
« on: September 30, 2006, 11:17:25 AM »
Many thanks to Chris at Guitarzone, and Tim of course.  Shame Tim forgot to post out my MQ early this week, but I'll let him off  ;)

Mule's up first for install today into my Gordon Smith GS-1.  I've gone for a Zebra and against the natural finish of my GS it will look great!  Can't wait to get it wired in and tried out!  This will be my gigging backup guitar and general "all rounder".

The MQ will be going into another Gordon Smith, this time a cherry SG-1.  It looks like an early 60s SG Junior but with a humbucker not a P-90.  The MQ is to make it sound like a 60s Junior too!  The guitar is very light and resonant, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how it sounds (probably be installing it tomorow).

Cheers again Chris/Tim, and I'll let you all know my thoughts once they're up and running!

Well after some wiring hassles, I finally got the Mule installed and running in my one pickup Gordon Smith.  I got the coil split version, and here's the review.

Pickup height is very important as I tried for a while to get the sweet spot.  Too close, and the tone gets too fuzzy - too far away and the output drops a bit too much for my liking.  I settled on 2mm from the strings on both the bass and treble side.  The result?  A classic rock tone through my GH50L  :D

The Mule has the trademark BKP clarity as I've heard on my Riff Raffs, and a nice treble cut without being too much.  With the wiring on the GS bypassing the tone control when it's on 10, the tone is about as cutting as I'd want.  Rolling back the tone to 8 or 9 gives a more Gibson-like tone with a few of the highs rolled off.  This lets the midrange show through a touch more and works really well for chunky chords or full leads.  Rolling back the tone even more gives a non-muddy full sound - kind of hard to describe but similar to a neck pickup tone.

With the coil split on, the same basic tone is still there but obviously thinner.  Roll back the tone and volume pots a touch and you can get a nice Gilmour-esque vibe going on.  Very useable for cleaner rhythm lines.  It's perfect for "Dancing in the Moonlight" by Thin Lizzy - coil tap for the verse/chorus and humbucker for the solo.  Lovely!

Compared to the Riff Raffs, the Mule is exactly what I hoped it would be - not as aggressive and with a more noticeable midrange hump.  In a Les Paul I think the maple top would work against this giving a more even tone if that's your bag.  I prefer the midrange coming through more, so it suits me just fine!

Compared to the standard Gordon Smith pickup, the Mule is WAY ahead in terms of build quality.  Everything is immaculate and perfectly lined up, the BKP logo is engraved on the bottom and the Mule just reeks of quality.  By comparison, the GS pickup looks thrown together while suffering from a hangover!  In terms of tone, the GS pickup is more similar to a Riff Raff I guess with a more biting treble.  It also doesn't have the clarity of the BKPs as you would expect.  They're not bad though, but a BKP is a definite upgrade and finished the guitar off nicely.

Unfortunately, I've been sent a Mississippi Queen without four conductor wiring so I'll have to send it back and swap it.  Some error somewhere between Chris at Guitarzone and Tim, so you'll have to wait for my review on that I'm afraid!  Gives me more chance to enjoy the Mule I guess!

4 wire on a single coil pickup?  Are you getting one with coil tap?
So many pickups, so little time

How do you wire a tone control like that? Sounds great as I usually disconnect the tone pots but would still like to control the highs if needed..

Also any chance of clips through the GH50L with mules, wanna see what the amp sounds like with a similar setup to me

I'm not sure how the GS works that way, but as you roll off the tone to 9 there's a slick "click" as the pot kicks in.  There's a maze of wires in the back of my single pickup guitar, and at least 4 capacitors, so I've no idea how you would retro-fit it to a Les Paul etc!

I'll see if I get chance this week to record a few things.  Anything in particular?

Oh right, sounds complicated to me

Not really bothered about what you play, so long as you can hear what its like for crunchy rhythm chords and maybe a bit of bluesy-rock lead.. cant stand when people do clips and its just shredding over a backing track, you have no idea what the sound is like for rhythm or anything other than shredding  :P

cool, that sounds nice, man. Is that "tone bypassed when set to 10" a standard GS thing, or did you wire it specially yourself? Cos I'd quite like to have that option too, possibly...

:drink:

EDIT: and would you say the mule works better than the riff raff in those cedar GS's? (i guess it does, from what you say)

+1, a sound sample need not be a shred lesson. 8)

Yep, the tone bypass is a standard Gordon Smith thing.  It's on both mine, and on my mate's GS2 Deluxe.  You can order standard wiring if you want I believe.

Re. Riff Raff or Mule in a cedar GS, it depends what you're after.  If you want a smoother more mid-range tone go for the Mule.  If you want that bit more bite and treble, then go for a Riff Raff.  I'm guessing what the Riff Raff would sound like in cedar as mine are in a mahogany SG.

I'll try and get some clips done this week.

^ cheers, yeah, I think I'd prefer smooth.

I still have to decide which GS I want (damn procrastination, I haven't even sent another email to GS yet!), once I get that done, and get a reply, I'll be onto Tim to see what he says.

Tim recommended a Rebel Yell to me but the clips I've heard of them sounded a bit bright for my tastes.  If you prefer smoother, I'd go for the Mule.

It looks like the mistake was on Tim's end (shock horror!) re. my MQ, and I'm guessing it'll be another week or so until I get it.  Bugger!

^ yeah, I'm thinking the mule might be good... I was kind of wanting to save it for when I get a LP-standard style guitar... but bearing in mind that could take me a year or two to save up for, I could always get it now, and then swap it into my LP-alike when I get it, and then get something different for the GS.
