mmmm they are definately superb value by the looks of things.... hmmmmmmmm so hard to choose...

tell me how you get on with yours (if you get it).... will be interesting.

also, referring back to making any guitar metal by changing pickups... could a p-90 guitar go quite heavy?

well, I mean, the amount of wood in the body will make a difference. something big and heavy like a les paul will sound heavier than something light with big giant chunks cut out of the wood. It's kind of ironic that the guitar's with the most big chunks cut out are the metal-style guitars... the shape's probably making them sound LESS heavy!

on the pickup front, I kind of meant "assuming you can fit a bridge humbucker in there"... i was kind of lazy. maybe the pig-90 might be worth a look, though, for p90's- they should sound a bit heavier than, say, strat single coils (unless you have a sinner!).

although if you're looking to get a metal guitar, I'd just keep your melody maker as is, and use the metal guitar for metal...

hmmmm ok... yer... i asked about p-90s cause of Bob (of Legra).. hes got a teak thingymajig fitted with BKP-92s.... double-cutaway... looks like it has a greeeat neck... but it just needs some beef.... maybe not... lol.

£550 for the Teak one... £550 for a black one with a scratchplate... (a PG something 633 or something i think it was)...

and £900+ for the red one.

thanks. I'd be all over that black one if it didn't have a floyd... (and if it had BKP's). dunno, though. EDIT: arg, it has no inlays! :(

hmmm. anyway, I've already emailed him, I'll see what he says. I guess the main thing is, I don't want to save maybe £200, but end up with something I don't really want, lol. I'd rather pay a little extra to get exactly what I want...

P-90's are great pickups for metal lead if you're prepared to give them some welly. Crank your Bass a little (about 8-ish), with mids the same, and then leave the treble wide open (10). You can tune the "Bite" with your tone control, or fiddling with the amp. Get as much gain laid on as necessary, and any sort of clean boost between yourself and the amp (I'm currently using a Behringer PB-100, so expense need not be a problem!).

I find P-90's can be a bit funny with OD pedals, but a good dollop of boost really opens them out.

At the end of the day though, sounding "Metal" hasn't as much to do with Hardware as it does with Technique. You really need to smack stuff a bit harder, dig the pick in etc. There are people out there who would sound metal with a Tele' into a JC-120. Heavy picks and sweat are the best possible tools here...

Dave: The inlays aren't a huuuuge deal, he quoted me £40 to whack some dots in it or £15 each for anything more complicated than that...and he was up for giving me the Rebel Yells in this thing - was -£60 for whatever's in it already, and then add whatever the Rebels cost. Works out cheaper than getting a different guitar and buying the Rebels separately :P

This was a point I was going to make, listen to the tones John 5 get out of a Tele. I left out the more expensive guitars, as regarding the Hamers you can usually pick up a decent 80 'standard' for not too much.

As for P90s theres nothing much heavier than a LP Jr being played to death. Theres also the LP doublecut range which to me sound different from the single cuts (I prefer the doublecuts).

I left out all the japanese brands (tokai come to mind for their Firebirds and explorers as well as the usual suspects in their range. BTW Kawai where into aluminum necked guitars and basses in the early 80s.

I would suggest heading into london for a day and have a look in wunjo & the rest of denmark St, not to buy anything, just to look at the more unusual 2nd hand items you will sometimes find something at a good price (it's hard but possible)

As a starter have a look here http://www.wunjoguitars.com/ele.htm for the Schecter metal or the fernandes ravelle. Theres also a couple of Herbst (?) guitars which look pretty damned metal. I'm not recomending anything there just saying.

Hey I thought you said you didn't like SGs (gibsons best work after the Firebird and the LP Jr)

reason i dont like SGs is the proportions/feel of em.... they feel like the neck is too flat against the body or its angled backwards or something... i dunno... i jsut dont like em.

There's only a couple of hardtail guitars there I'd take to a metal gig, a Les Paul :roll: and the Musicman SUB1 (very good price for it too) which fits Sambo's brief pretty well.

Personally theyre all too expensive but it was a demonstration that there more to metal guitars than Ibanez & ESP really.

Guild used to do a nice LP style guitar (cept for their horrible tailpiece) up until a few years ago.

Basically get out there and research young man.

EDIT: good idea about heading to denmark street, rob. denmark street is cr@p on many levels (mainly price), but it does have loads of guitars to try. and you're only about 2 minutes from the soundcontrol under virgin in oxford street, and about 30 seconds from the soho soundhouse on charing cross road. it's a good place to try lots of stuff in a short space of time. and when one shop kicks you out, you can just go to the next (even though a lot are owned by the same people and you might find the same guy working in any of about 4 of them... not at the same time, though. that'd be weird.)
