what do you want the Rat to do that it currently doesn't?

Apparently the company has changed hands a few times over the years and the sound of the pedals is inconsistent from one to the other.  The early pedals are supposed to sound the best.

Have a look at Jack Ormans site (I don't have the link here) as he has some Rad mods listed.

Part of the original Rat sounds was because in the early days they used an op-amp that wasn't suitable for audio applications (according to the spec, but it sounded right :) )

the older ones (i.e. not the reissues) sound better because they use the LM308 opamp which is now rediculously hard to find - I found one in my local electrical shop but nothing anywhere else (even on the net).

you can try all the usual mods that you can do with opamp distortion circuits - different configurations of silicon & germanium diodes or LEDs either after the opamp's output and/or in the feedback loop.

increase the gain pot's value for more gain, change cap values to EQ the circuit to taste - the first cap in the signal chain always has a noticeable effect on the tone.

it's hard to say what mods to try since you weren't very specific - is the gain too low? farty bass? buzzy treble? not enough mids?

Try farnell as I got 6 metal can versions about 18 months ago from them (the metal can wasn't intentional it was a orfering mistake, but I see people are charging extra for that format now)

I was looking specifically for the 8-pin opamp version rather than the metal cans but I may well give them a try if they're available from Farnell.  Cheers!!!
