My preferred instruments have been Gibson/Epiphone thinline/ES models for quite some time and I never really got on with Fenders. But then the guitarshop I work for traded in this Jaguar. While I cleaned and renovated it it sorta intrigued me and when I'd restored it to playing status I just couldn't stop playing it.

It's a late 1963 (pre-CBS) Fender Jaguar, the black body is a refin but apart from that it's all original. A white undercoat that on some places wears through the black suggests it probably used to be Olympic White. After this baby is payed off I will have it restored to it's former glory by a pro refinisher.

Not bad for a first Fender, ey?

Thx Indy! Well this one wasn't cheap obviously but not terribly expensive. I payed just a notch above the price for the current USA reissue.

I have wanted a Jag since I first saw one they are the business. I love the sound of them, and the short scale

Congratulations

One thing though if you intend to play it (why own it and not play it), is apparently the bridges rattle and the strings also fall off the saddles. apparently you can use a replacement bridge (I think it's the music master) or theres an attachment called the buzz stop

I think 63 was also the year they changed from the slab fingerboard.

Cool guitar. I love those little Jags. Dunno if you wanna mod it or keep it original but changing the original bridge saddles to Mustang bridge saddles is an absolute must.

Thx for all your replies! I played it some more and I love it's jangly and gritty tone and the overall feel.

I know about all the trouble people seem to have with the stock Jaguar bridge and it's surely very prone to buzzing because of the way it's constructed. Mustang bridge saddles are heavier (solid copper) and have a single deeper string groove so they tend to work better. However a lot of this bad rep also comes from people using thin strings on Jazzmasters and Jags, even Fender puts 009 or 010 strings on the reissues which is way too thin.

The stock bridge works fine with 011-049s after some TLC. I took it apart completely and reassembled it, putting the three different length springs where they are supposed to be and locking the saddles by choosing the right angle/screw length. No buzzes, no string skipping etc. 8) As my goal is to keep this Jag as stock as possible I'll try the original bridge first.

The stock PU's are just great so no BKP's needed here. Should a pickup short out or fades away I'll have Tim restore it.

I suppose 11s would be fine with the slightly shortere scale too (the world has got so used with 9s & 10s).

What sort of weight is it as thats what put me of a Japanese reissue about 3 years ago, it was just so heavy. Though the strat I got instead is a bit of a porker too.
