Holy Sh- I just got my RYs installed
« on: October 09, 2006, 11:20:43 PM »
I just got my guitar back from the shop (I can't do it on my own!) and first thing I did was of course plug it in. I got just the bridge replaced on my Gibson SG with the Rebel Yell, but it's done a world of difference.

At first I wasn't impressed. It sounded good, but worth the money? This was of course about a second or two into playing. After that it hit me. Hard.

I played along with most of my favorite songs just to compare, and I can't help but think that my guitar sounds better than these tracks. Before I would think "Hey, this sounds pretty close to what they sound like" with my stock pickups, but now it's like "I should let these guys know about these pickups.."

Is it just me, or do these make you play better too? I was busting out riffs and notes like it was nothing even with the brand new set of gauge 11s at standard tuning!

Before the upgrade I had never used both pickups at the same time (putting the switch in the middle position) It just never really sounded good to me. Now... I can't take it off. The bridge and the neck sound like they should be from the same guitar when played on their own... but together it sounds like... I don't know! It sounds amazing clean omg. I... I love it.

Anyway.. I had to stop playing because my ears started hurting a bit... I can't wait to play it again..

Sorry, Just thought I'd tell you guys haha.

Yeah that must be it. Steve Stevens actually can't play unless he's got a guitar with RYs  :D

All this time he's been holding out on us!! God it's 12:39am here and my neighbors would not be happy but I want to crank it up so bad...

I can't wait till I'm off shift tomorrow so I can come home and play.

glad u like the rebel yell, its my fave pickup as well. What guitar and amp are you using it with?

I know that feeling of being able to play better its cos u are more into it, every time i get new gear I tend to play a lot more and thus improve.

how does the neck pickup sound? i hear loads about the bridge position- and it seems ur very impressed with the in-between, but what kind of stuff is good with the neck? what's the definition like?

I'm playing my Gibson SG through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I can still squeeze out a great impersonation of that Marshall chunkyness with it though which I'm very glad about.

I only changed the bridge pickup haha, so I have no idea what the Neck RY sounds like sorry :(

Still, the bridge pickup has taken the middle switch which I hardly ever used before to something I actually enjoy. I was playing more with it today and I turned down the tone on my neck pickup to around 3ish and it gave me this wonderful sound. Sort of a jazzy muffled noise in the very lows (like A and downward) but everything else has this sort of...gah I don't know how to describe it. Point is, it sounds absolutly wonderful. I use that for solos now haha.

The biggest difference I noticed though now looking back is my hands. The pickup seems to react much more to how hard I hit or how much I mute. It isn't on/off anymore. I can pretty much play awesome muted riffs then bust out a solo that rises above the rest of the band, then go back to rhythem without changing my volume dials at all!

I keep looking at my hands... they automatically adjusted to it without me knowing... it's so weird...

Ok I've said enough. I'm sure you all know what I'm going through.

The neck is nice and fat and warm.  It's definitely a quieter, nicer sounding neck but perhaps has a little too loud lows with a lot of gain when I play down the neck, which is my only gripe about it although not a big one as I usually only solo on the neck with that much gain.

The bridge in contrast sounds a bit meaner and screams a lot more, and doesn't sound wimpy next to the neck either without a lot of gain on it.

Search the Players forum for "Rebel Yell" and hunter did a clean neck clip.... it sounds roughly like that with my Vox AC30 too, so I'd say it should give you a very good idea what the Rebel Yell neck sounds like.

You should have got the neck too! Shame ;)

On a more serious note, I bet the RYs rock through that amp.  They have enough "attitude" to them that you should be able to pull off a more Marshall tone, and yet still produce that sweet clean tone.... too bad you don't have the neck, because now I'm interested to hear it through a Fender Hot Rod.

Haha, yeah at the time I ordered I only had enough for one pickup, and the bridge on my SG had somehow died (I still don't know what happened) so it was either not play for a week till my next pay check or order it and play sooner. Either way now I have more money I'm probably going to buy a neck pickup, though I'm not sure if I should get another RY... I want something with a nice Bass response, but I don't really know what else I want :(
