Volume pot won't turn off at 0 - help?
« on: October 10, 2006, 11:14:28 AM »
The Gordon Smith GS-1 I have recently fitted with a Mule has decided that it's volume knob won't be completely off at 0.  I'm sure it wasn't like this before the pickup change, so I'm wondering if I've done something wrong?  If I roll the pot right down to 0 I still get about 5% of volume coming through.  I works fine other than this problem.

What could cause it?  Do I need a new pot?

Sometimes you'll get a pot that doesn't reach the end of its travel properly, and therefore won't cut out all the sound...

The problem may have been there before, but while you can hear 5% of the mule's volume now, 5% of the previous pup may have been too quiet :drink:

EDIT: New pot is the answer I would think

^ exactly, tis how a pot/wiper works and would imagine the higher grade pup, BKP, is more prominently showing the pots weakness. The 'wiper' is not fully zero'ing.
Do ya self a favor and replace em all with summit like CTS pots.

Cheers guys - I thought that might be the case.  Trouble is, it's a pull/push pot and CTS don't make one  :(

I bought some gibson push pull pots and bought some unnamed brand from www.fake58.com, and they were exactly the same but a thrid of the price.

They looked exactly the same as the gibson ones apartfrom the packaging, but that doesnt matter!

oh and i forgot to say, I had a problem with my push pull where it wouldnt turn down at all, and it turned out to be a bad earth connection (easily solved with a bit of solder and a good joint!).

anyway, hope that helps!
