I need a new P90 for my Hamer Korina Jr..help me out!!
« on: October 14, 2006, 01:05:58 PM »
Hi Guys
I'm on a quest to eliminate harshness from my rig.
My favourite guitar is my Hamer Korina Jr.It has a sd custom P90 as stock.I like the sound, but lately I've been thinking that something different might suit me better.
I play heavy sludgy blues , P90 guitars into matamps. The tone I'm looking for is fat, thick but that sounds good dirty and has enough raunch to cut through.

Any P90 users out there give me any advice??

I have the mini-Mat and several BK P-90's.  I would go for the P-91 or if you want more bottom end, the Pig-90.  The Pig is less bright overall though so this was why I thought the 91 (both are Alnico V).

I have several juniors which I am sure are similar sounding to the Hamer (the older mahogany is lighter than the new stuff).  I have the Pig 90 in one, and a BKP-90 in another.  I find the P-90 just a little bit lacking in the ballsy sound that I like from juniors.  I ended up putting it into the neck position on my Special (it is probably my fault for getting it with alnico IV magnets!).
So many pickups, so little time

Hi riffpowers,

Early Korina Hamer = yummie indeed :D

I have BKP-rewound P90s in my Epiphone Casino, the bridge P90 similar to a BKP91. I think the BKP91 would be well suited for your purposes. It has enough poke/sting to sound raw with your Matamps without going muddy. This is helped by the clear and defined attack on the wound strings, which is very much like the really old P90s. Personally I wouldn't use a higher output PU because this will increase risk of muddiness and lessen dynamic response.

Also I'd like to add that a level booster like an MXR micro-amp or any other make really works great with this particular PU. I much prefer the amp-going-wild sound of a booster to any overdrive pedal. Your Matamps are also well suited to this approach.

Good luck,
Martijn
