can someone help me with getting the dimebag sound?
what effects does he use on songs like 'walk'
basically what is his set up?

He used Solid State Randall amps, a Whammy pedal, a Dunlop Cry Baby (i think), Dean & Washburn guitars, that's all i know really.

Bill Lawrence 500XL bridge, Seymour Duncan 59 Neck
Randall Warhead Amps.. mahogany bodied dean guitars.

switched over to washburn for a bit but imo they were never as good and i don't even think dime was really happy, fact he used his "Dean From Hell" for pretty much every pantera recording even when he was endorsing Washburn.

I'd say you want a solid state amp with lots of gain, quite a bit of compression and, if you're trying to emulate the rhythm sound he got in the studio a noise gate, I believe that the gating that you hear on Vulgar display was actually added to the signal at the mixing desk rather than in front of the amp. :)

A quick addition I've heard he kept using the Bill Lawrence 500XL after the Duncan Dimebucker was released.

Went to Washburns after Dean got bought out, returned to Dean when Zelinski returned.
Also used Digitech whammy pedals.

I think I read that his neck pups were DM not SD but I'm sure they put SDs in the guitars now cos of the dimebucker bridge.

Theres something very special about the Dimebucker.........

I think Dimebag was the "only" one who cold make it sound WICKED!

lol... he never used it. He kept using Bill Lawrence L-500s even after the Dimebucker came out. I'm not sure if he even owned a Dimebucker.

i'd also just like to add, Dime was $%&#ing mint!.. one of the strongest metal guitarists i've ever heard, im pretty sure any mahogany bodied guitar with a miracle man and a solidstate amp would dime the dime sound ;)

It's worth bearing in mind that it's another classic case of "it's mostly in the fingers". Who else could make that godawful tone sound so good? :lol:

oh yea totally fubar, it's like how many people nail the brown sound.. i mean it's not a hard sound to get imo.. it's just the people can't play like evh thats where it goes wrong.. i mean that "el strada" dude from the van halen tribute band nails van halens playing style..

Hi 'famous' lightning guitar had Bill Lawrence XL-500 in bridge and different PAF type neck pups. Mostly an SD '59.

Interestingly he did'nt have anything to do with the graphics or XL-500.

Darrell pestered his father for a guitar for along time and eventually his father bought him a Dean ML. That very same day Darrell won a Dean ML (later to become the 'lightning guitar).
Darrell sold the 'won' guitar as he needed money and did'nt want to offend his doting father.
Later he re-encountered the guitar in it's lightning painted/XL-500 glory and after a looooooooong time managed to procure it back :)

Dime also used an old MXR distortion+ (3-band eq model) and of course those Randalls are essential to the Dime tone. You can pickup an old Randall like the ones he used pretty cheap if you're willing to ship one over from the US.

I'd imagine he used an EQ in his rig somewhere too in order to tune in that crushing low-end.

There are various stories on whether he used the Bill Lawrence L500-XL made by THE Bill Lawrence or the ones made by the guy that owns the brand name 'Bill Lawrence'. They are supposedly very different sounding pickups.

If I were to guess, I'd say they were made by THE Bill Lawrence since it was in his old Dean. The newer guitars 'may' have got the 'other' BL pickups.

Washburn and Randall are part of the same company
I reckon it was a convenient tie in when Dean stopped being the company it once was.

Once Dean Zelinsky came back on board he renewed his endorsement of the Dean brand
