Author Topic: OK, why is my guitar doing this.... (Read 9218 times)

it's making a weird buzzing sound when any of the pots are on, but as soon as one of the active pots is changed to 0, the buzzing stops, is it just the wiring, or something else (i didn't wire it up, i got the local shop to do it)

also, my bridge is royally $%&#ed, but i've already sent a message to jonathon about a new one, so that's not really a problem atm, i just felt like ranting about it

Seems obvious but it sounds like a faulty connection, I'm not a complete expert but I've fixed a few problems similar to that on my own guitar. Take the backplates off and take a picture of the wiring/switches might be easier to figure out.

I guess you have a BK bridge and a Duncan neck from the wiring. It looks like the white connector goes from the pots to the switch and back. Not sure about the blue covered wires to the jack.

Also you seem to have way too much wire in there!!

Do you have a multimeter? if you do check the earth/ground connection on the jack against the back of both pots, you should have zero resistance on it.

Can you move some wires (especially the white connector) and take another picture. That might let me see something else.

Looking at it, it looks like he wired the switch strangely, but it could just be the angle. What I think you should have is this:

pin 1 or 4 red from MQ
pin 2 or 5 wire to vol pot
pin 3 or 6 white from MQ

The black and screen should be soldered to the back of the vol pot.

It looks like the green was cut back at BK, but if all is wired as above and the solder joints are good, then you could try swapping the white for the green.

To check the earth you can basically set any resistance because you want the circuit to register 0 (to show it is grounded correctly).

OK, i've looked through the wiring, and taken some more pictures in the hope that you can easily spot something which is amiss... the switch only has one wire going to it, with three smaller wires coming out of it as in the pic below...

the pots i can't make out what is going on, except that i've been able to track where the big white connector is from, its on the same colour wire as is going to the switch, and connects the four small wires from that and it goes to one of the blue wires going to the jack and red wire going to neck volume

as for the rest i'm completely lost, i'm usually dealing with computer parts where everything can just plug in and it'll work....

I think that I can see the problem with the MQ, there are 2 ways to wire coil split, one is to short one coil to ground, the other is to drop the live to the coil. He has wired using the short to ground. He has wired the MQ the same way, however this doesn't work with a coil tap, because when you short to ground you are just left with the small number of turns. if you wire the switch the way I said above and take off any other wires that go to the switch, then I think it will work.

If it doesn't I'll study the pictures a bit more and I might need you to take one of the jack socket's wiring.
