I found Guitar Buyer to be the best, but as with all magazines, they seem to give anything a good review which is annoying.

advertising revenue is the phrase that covers such events.

Rob...

yes.

though guitar buyer does seem to be better than most. I've seen the odd bad review in it. as opposed to TG, where if I bought an advert for my patented "shoe-box strung with elastic bands" guitar, they'd give it a good review.

^ It's not anymore

Just to add my bit:

As guitar magazines go, they're all good depending on what you're looking for...

Total Guitar seems mostly aimed at emo posers that don't really care about gear, or can't afford anything good.

Guitarist is quite a good read with some interesting interviews at times. It seems to be written by people who have some understanding of what they're on about at least (unlike TG) and has some fairly constructive reviews about decent gear (most of which i can't afford)

Guitar Buyer is a good magazine too, although it seems more product orientated and I don't have the cash to buy stuff often enough to read it on a regular basis - but I always grab a few issues when I'm in the market for buying something or other

So yeah. That's my opinion on guitar mags :drink:

recently I went on a long trip and bought some guitar mags (guitar player and classic rock) to kill time on the plane and they both sucked horribly. It was just full of advertising and BS. I literally just flipped through the pages and that was that. I'm definitely never ever getting one again. and they're pretty pricey too..

I subscribe to TG and Guitarist, and I think they're both perfectly good magazines. Yes, there's a lot of advertising, but there's a lot of advertising in any specialty magazine, and that's part of the point of a specialty magazine anyway.
Most of the people who moan about TG seem to believe that they should run only Slayer, Pantera and Metallica (but only pre 1991) tabs and features, and to be fair they DO do a lot of that stuff anyway (proving that you can't please all the people all the time).Indeed, it's a much fairer criticism that Guitarist has WAY too much blues coverage.
Now I'm something of a realist, and I realise that there's probably never going to be a mag called "Hard rock and melodic metal guitarist", and so accept that the magazines that are available are going to appeal to a slightly wider readership. It's the same with the reviews. Are you going to by a Mexican strat? Maybe not, but many, many people are.
As for MCR, they are a highly relevant modern guitar band, and indeed their coverage in TG up until this point has been pretty minimal (especially when when you consider that groups like Lamb of God have probably had more). The bottom line is that more people are going to be interested in MCR and their playing than in some self harming, horror film obsessed Finnish Tech Metal band who've shifted a tenth of the number of albums.

Total guitar got bad many years ago, Guitar techniques has gotten pretty bad lately too.

The only guitar magasine which seems to be good and always has been good is Young Guitar, the only problem is its in japanese but that doesnt affect the excellent dvd instructionals and spot on tablature.

Total guitar lets face it is is mostly for those who are starting off (or are utterly cr@p like me).

Theres nothing wrong with that, and I find their 'Specials' more interesting.

I find that although there is intersting stuff in say Guitar Techniques, theres too much 'advanced' material, that even if I had the ability.

No magazine is going to be good all the time, but it dosn't excuse shoddy reviews of equipment

^ seconded... however.

When I was a beginner (about 6 or 7 years ago), Total Guitar wasn't a beginner's magazine. All those features that they brought in for the beginner guitarists came in ironically when I didn't need them any more... I'd have killed to have their beginner columns when I was starting out.

Grrr.

I'm with you, though. I have no problem with MCR or whoever being in the mag. It's the shoddy reviews that annoy me.

I havn't seen them give a bad review yet, it annoys me, i would rather they be a bit more critical, they always review the korean made guitars and give them sparkling reviews when blatantly they arn't that good. It's always the same, and usually it is for the price. for example: It may not be as Gibson but for over half the price it's a great guitar! 10/10!!!
It may not be the proper PRS guitars, but it's a cheap version and it sounds great because i'm using loads of effects with it!!! 10/10!!!

It sickens me.

The thing that most annoys me is when they dont really describe the tone of distortion pedals. They just say "Hows it sound? well, its got enough gain to make any metalhead go crying for their mummy with their tails between their legs" or something stupid like that

For beginners? This year they've had tab for Avenged Sevenfold, Steve Vai, Children of Bodom, Van Halen, Black Label Society, Trivium and various others that are far from basic.

I havn't bought TG for about 7 months, but certainly did find that the vast majority of the material was for beginners for a good 12 months or so.
