I just got my guitar from the shop (after almost 2 weeks) and I can say I'm very happy with these pickups. they're in a black epi lp and they've made the guitar a bit more bright which I think is something it really lacked. I also really really love the middle position now.

I was just wondering if there was a way to check if your pups have been wax potted or not. I ordered unpotted but from what Tim described about how unpotted pups are "hard to control" I'm not sure if mine are. I play them through a solid state amp so could that be a reason they're not super sensitive?

how loud are you playing, and how much gain?

(i don't know the answer, but I guess someone else will ask this anyway, at some stage. I also seem to remember tim saying that the unpotted ones weren't that hard to control if they're made well (as his are)).

It is hard to check, if they are covered it is almost impossible, uncovered you can sometimes see wax around the bobins or if you undo one of the pole screws.

However, I have unpotted Stormy Mondays and they do not squeal. We'll have a definative answer to this after Saturday, because there will be some very high gain amps here then, but TO has played them with the Twilight Drive and they didn't squeal when he was pushing the amp.

If the pickups sound the way you want then I wouldn't worry. I am sure you got what you ordered.

either way it's not a problem I'm very happy with the pickups. they sound so incredibly clear and they're a bit louder than the stock pups. I was just curious that's all. I was playing through a solid state amp with quite a bit of gain but I wasn't playing very loud. I thought that the volume or the fact that it's a solid state amp may have something to do with it. but anyway...seriously great pickups. huge difference from the cr@ppy stock epi pups. the neck has more treble and the bridge doesn't sound as harsh..just beautiful.

I had unpotted pickups in my Les Paul before my Rebel Yells (not Mules though!). They did not feedback at all with my Vox, but if I used pedals or other amps, they would feedback uncontrollably.

I am not sure if Tim did something else that helps them not feedback, or your amp doesn't have the problems.

(From the pickups i have next to me right now)

Covered Pickups: On pickups with a cover (nickel etc), turn them over and look at the little screw heads underneath because sometimes they have wax in them or sometimes theres a lot of wax on the underneath.

If its open coil (zebra etc): this is a bit harder in my opinion, but look at the top of the pickup (the coloured bit), and notice there are 4 small holes (slightly bigger than a full stop size), these can sometimes get filled with wax (not always), or sometimes on the top there might be a bit of wax on the coloured bit, but you have to look carfully!

they're open coiled. I see 6 little holes on the top of each pickup. there's 2 bigger ones. the big ones don't have any wax cause I can actually see the coil but the other ones have some white stuff and I'm sure it's the wax. I think the comments box wasn't checked cause I ordered one pickup zebra one black and I got both black. I didn't really care about that but I guess they missed the unpotted request too. ah well, the pickups sound amazing anyway. they're so incredibly clear that I can't describe. There's also this sound every time I pluck a note, it sounds like every time a pluck there's a really high pitch note that sounds just before the note I actually play. It's really hard to describe and I don't know what it is but I love it. It sounds almost like a squeak. awesome pups.

Mules are cool - i'm playing Bluesbreaker era Clapton and the moment and they nail the sound without any encouragement - beautiful!

Something similar happened to me with a blackdog bridge pickup. I ordered a cream one but a really white one turned up. I told Tim about it and he said it was the correct colour of the original PAF pickups, but it was whiter than my white pickups on my strat!!

so i changed it and now i have a proper cream colour.

I think it was white and not the original colour, but then i could be wrong!

So i think they make mistakes sometimes, but generally they are a great company!

had unpotted covered gob sg pickups....couldn't get within 10ft of an amp
